Any 4H club members?

Wev'e talked about everything from A~Z don't remember anyone mentioning 4H. My daughter is involved, pretty cool stuff.

The book cover I scanned is from circa 1952. My dad gave it to me around '72 I'm letting my daughter take it to her next meeting.

Thumbs up 4-H is a great organization.

Yes, I was a 4-H member in southeastern Kansas for five years. That is a great organization. Projects I had included wheat for three years, dairy cow and calf for two.

Still remember the 4-pledge. I'll try to recall the complete pledge.

4-H Pledge:
I pledge my head to clear thinking,
my heart to greater loyalty,
my hands to larger service,
and my health to better living
for my club, my community, my country and my world.

4-H Motto:
To make the better best

Colors:
Green and white

This organization used to be for rural kids but 4-H is open to both rural and urban young people today.

I belonged to the 4-H from 4th grade all the way through to my senior year. I loved every second of it. I have a trunk full of ribbons and metals from various contets, got to go to some great places and made some life long friends.

GENERAL FARM SAFTY AND WOODS CRAFT. SMALL BIT ON FIREARMS SAFTY. THE FIREARMS SAFTY PROGRAM THEY HAVE TODAY IS TOPS. EVEN GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO GET THE GIRLS INTO THE CLASSES. THE BEST PART IS THE PROGRAM IS LOOKING FOR CITY KIDS. NOT JUST RURAL

Thumbs up

That's a great link, Jerry. Glad to see that 4-H is still thriving.

In 1948, at the age of 11 yrs old, I joined 4-H when my dad moved our family to wheat/dairy farm near El Dorado, KS. I belonged to Glencoe 4-H Club, along with about 20 other kids. Not only did we enjoy those monthly meetings but we had other farm related activities.

For example, one Saturday we all met at a member's farm and participated in a project to learn how to plow terraces. Other events included the annual 4-H fair, usually held in conjunction with the county fair. There we displayed samples of our crops, wheat in my case, for judges to determine which was the best. I remember gettng blue ribbons each year. Of course, we had used a special equipment to clean and sort out the very best grains which were displayed in the 4-H competition.

I had bought a registered holstein calf at a dairy cattle auction near Tonganoxie, KS, which a couple of years later produced another heffer. Took that cow to the fair to compete, too. I remember that those registered cows had long names. My cow was named Selium Trine American Model and I abbreviated her name to "Stam" for practical purposes. Of course, her registered papers had her complete ancestorial background listed.

In additon we attended the 4-H camp for about a week each year, usually held immediately after the school term ended. There were lots of fun things there to do for kids and plenty of adults to supervise the activities.

I still have my 4-H lapel pins and ribbons earned during those competitions.

Yes, I have good memories of my participation in 4-H Club. The program provided us with worthwhile activities which were educational and also provided the social aspect's, too. That's much better than the miscief we might have been doing if we weren't involved in the club's activities.
