ammo problem

Hi,

I took my CZ VZ24 out to the range today and test fired it with both Federal Classics and Winchester X12 8mm 170gr. Mauser ammo (btw I noticed that the Win is "slightly" longer than the Fed).

Anyway, I've had instances where the bolt would not lock once the ammo is fed into the chamber.

I am wondering if anyone has experience something similar with their mausers and what migth be a possible cause?

My mauser is in good shape. I also had a legitimate gunsmith check out the headspace, etc.

Appreciate your thoughts.

I have several mausers and my 24 is the only one that does this.
The reason is the bolt does not open the exstractor all the way to engage the round when the rounds are loaded into the chamber and it makes it very hard to close the bolt.
I have tried shot blocks and have had no luck.
The only way I have found to avoid this is to load the round into the mag and let the bolt take it out.

is your problem when single loading or when firing from the magazine. the mauser is not designed for the extractor to snap over the case head, it is meant for the case head to slide up under it. if this is happening when feeding from the magazine i would try a new follower spring.

You folks are right. I was single loading it and not feeding it from the magazine. I guess that explains everything.

lefty o - You are correct about loading the rounds into the magazine. One of the design changes when Springfield Armory used the Mauser design for the 1903 Springfield, was to allow space for the extractor to move into in order to grasp the head of the cartridge case of a cartridge placed directly into the chamber. If you didn't know, the US Government paid Mauser about $100,000.00 in royalty fees to use the Mauser design.

sirfagin - The Mauser was specifically designed so that this can't be done. I am not sure of the design reasons, but they were designed to pick up a round from the magazine only, and to not close on a cartridge case already in the chamber.

Gyrene, the US did not pay "Royalty Fees". The Government PIRATED the Mauser rifle design, then basically dared Mauser to sue the US. Mauser sued the US government for something like 6 counts of patent infringement in the 1903 Springfield, and eventually won. The "royalty fees" you referred to was part of the patent infringement settlement.

BTW, it was not the only time this happened. You may want to compare a US M-60 to the German MG-42.
