I was hunting in the woods, and went around saying that the deer does not know if it was shot with one cartridge or another and I did now know if I was shooting one cartridge or another.
I have rifles in .222, .223, .243, 6mmBR,.243Win, 25/35, .250/3000, 257 Roberts AI, 6.5 jap, 6.5x55, 270, 7x57mm, 7mm Rem mag, 30 Mauser, 30-30, 303Sav, 300Sav,.308, 30-06, 300 Win Mag, 7.5 French, 7.5 Swiss, 7.62x39mm,303Brit, 7.62x54R, 8x57mm, 338WM, 45/70, and others.
Then I started shooting over sage brush and grass. I was killing at 500 yards and missing at 650 yards.
Now I am into 7mmRemMag with boat tailed bullets.
There are high skill guys shooting 308 at long range, but I don't think they are that good with the first shot of the day with a cold bore.
Back on topic, I seriously can't tell the difference between 308 and 30-06 in terms of recoil, trajectory, accuracy, or terminal ballistics. I have ~ 12 308s and only ~ 6 of the 30-06s.
I had a pre 64 M70 that the late owner in Alaska had it in 30-06 but I converted it to 270.
When it was in 30-06, with it, his heir tells me, he killed ..
The previous owner shot:
2 grizzlies
6 moose
10 mountain goats
6 sheep
109 Sitka Black tailed deer
16 black bear
2 caribou
I have since shot 8 mule deer with it as a 270.
