From what I remember it was a factory job, but sales were never very brisk. This was in the early/mid 80's and the GP 100/S&W 686 weere going head to head for the revolver/.357 market. Including the police dept. sidearme contracts. Police depts. wern't about to pay Big $ for 7 rnds of .357 in a 1911 package when they couldget by with a 6 shooter at $300 or so. -UR

Thanks fellas, I guess if I want a .357 magnum autoloader, I will have to stick with a Desert Eagle, or try the new .357sig.

( and .40 right now,talk of .45 and possibly others as the interest grows now that the ban is over.
Ruger is going to have to face more competition in the near future from other pistol caliber manufacturiors,I have owned and shot the 9mm ruger,PC9 and now have the Berretta Storm,no contest over all,the Beretta is the clear winner in accuracy,light weight,easy take down,and reliability.
I am sure more will be coming out.

No one has yet made them in 357, but some day I'd like to do that with an AKM. Ruger makes a gas operated 44 Mag carbine. They have amlost done one in 45 ACP, but haven't because they're dorks.

The .357 is very popular,but being a rimmed cartridge and pretty hot it doesn't seem too popular with the folks that make semi-auto carbines,or pistols for that matter.
I suggest that those folks start concentrating on the .38 super,very accurite,low recoil,unfortunitly in a pistol there is a huge flash,in carbines,especially with flash huders it would be a bear,especially if the manufacturers started building different loads.

The Coonan is a 1911 sized pistol. Basically it IS a 1911. I had an early Coonan and unless you loaded it heavy it didn't function well.

I've got a 44/40 rossi lever gun, my mates tell me that compared to their 44 mags it's gutless, but I dunno, I reckon it's alright. does anyone know the statistics and comparisons for this, cause we are just arguing with no real facts. Fun but pointless really

My shooting buddy has the EMF cowboy levergun in .357 magnum, and it has impressed me with it's accuracy out to 100 yards. It'll handle most of our deer hunting down here fine.
I tried a few of my handloads in it, using the Hodgdon manual's suggestion of 18 grains of Lil' Gun under a 158 grain JHSP. Average velocity was around 2000 FPS! Highest recorded was 2020FPS. And virtually no recoil. Over 1500FPS in my 4" barreled Ruger Security Six, without the hand-stinging recoil of the factory Remmy loads!
Very clean-burning too. This would be a good load to try in a Semi-auto carbine, if I had one in .357 Magnum.
Dana, I remember reading of those LeMag conversions several years back - just a little too much grunt for me. An M1 Carbine in .357 Magnum would be the ticket! Maybe using the Desert Eagle magazine.

I like the 45 Win Mag the best but you don't want to fire a full box of shells. Talk about kick. The 50AE is more of a long push.
