Savage 1899

I was told that my old savage (1925 .300 savage) is not safe to fire as the receiver may crack. Has anyone else heard this?

Your reciever should be fine to shoot, it was made after the 90,000 serial number.

What happened is that some with pre-90,000 serial numbers cracked (I've never seen it happen) as Savage didn't start heat treating the recievers till this point.

I personally think this is just a vicious rumor!

Unfortunately your rifle has been bubba'd by someone, the 300 Savage wasn't even available back in your rifles serial number range. It's been rebarreled.

Well before I read this I wenty out and fired a box and guess what. The primers on all the brass backed out a bit. Do you think this gun is salvageable? or could it be that there was too much pressure and the receiver was stretched out ? Anyone know a competent gunsmith in the New York area who can look at it ?

Sounds like a headspace problem, most likely from swapping the barrels, you may have to get the barrel taken down a thread or two.
