Hunting for info

Hello all. I just found a nice 99 in 300 Savage at a gun show and I could use some help with age and type. The s/n is 6445xx and the stamp above the lever reads "20D". The barrel is 24". The buttstock is plain walnut, pistol-grip, with shotgun-style, steel buttplate and hard rubber grip cap. The fore-end is checkered with a Schnabel tip. The receiver does have the cartridge counter. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have a 99 Savage; a 22HP sn 209--- , with 20" barrel; all numbers match including stamped wood.
I thought it was a 99H, but it has a steel but plate and an extra .420 barrel.
Any ideas.

Do all 99 H have a hard rubber but plate; and were .410 barrels included with 99s that early?

99H 22HP 1905-1919 .410 combo sets 1922-1934
another listing by Savage is 22HP added in 1912-1919 known as 99H somewhat conflicting in the same book "The History of The SAVAGE mod 99 Rifle by D.P. MURRAY". STOEGER ARMS listed the .410 barrel for the T/D should be sent along with the T/D frame for factory fitting. I have a 22HP T/D and two combo cased sets .250-3000 .410 and .303 .410
Buttplates were changed as time went on. Checking the #number on the underside of the buttplate is crossed with date of mfg in a chart on page 3-84. another section shows the changes in buttplates as time went on but not saying when they took place. Sorry not much help.

Bulsa, the 1899H did come with a steel shotgun buttplate on special order but yours isn't one, I think you've got an early version of the 99F.
The 410 barrel was most likely an add-on somewhere down the road.

Fred, you've got a 1952 model 99 EG.

A Savage 99 with a S/N of 6445OO - 644600 in calb. 300 Sav. was produced sometime after 1951. Take off the forearm and look at its base(in/on the wood) and this should show what model you have - i.e. - A,B,C...F or look at the inside of the receiver(w/forearm still off) and the model letter should be there. Hope this helps/works for you. That's where mine are located.

No, no, you can't go by that.

Freds is a model EG made in 52 as already stated. I've never come across any 99 that had EG stamped on the inside of the receiver above the rotary mag. My 250-3000 has a Z stamped up there (as do all the 250-3000's) yet there's no such thing as a model Z. These were assembly marks.
