| Member | destroying tanks, with a M16. I have a Question, Is it possible to blow up tanks with a M16? I've got a co-worker who is ex-Army and he told me that there is a spot on American Tanks that if you can shoot it, you can destroy the tank with one shot. He said that he ticked off his Commanding General by out shooting him and the final "test" of his rifleman skills was to hit a certain spot on a tank and blow it up. Apparently the Gen. shot the tank on his 2nd shot and my co-worker shot it on his 3rd. What I want to know is, is this really possible and where is the spot(he couldn't tell me. which lends me to believe that he was pulling my leg) or was he pulling my leg? Thanks,

Trader Rating: (0) | Perhaps he was refering to the MILES training device? It's an integrated laser system used for combat training. The system is pretty full proof. A soldier can't kill a tank with an M16 hit, but a tank sure as heck can kill a soldier with any of it's weapons. I know there were some initial problems when it was first introducted in the late '70's. There were times when a soldier could kill a tank with his rifle. Oh the other hand he may have just been BS'ing you. Last edited by Dallas; 02-13-2005 at 12:11 PM. |

Leaving the only other volnerable spots to be the battery well and the tracks. The well has a 5/8" steel sheild covering it (aside from the fact that it is situated on top or the tank). Theoretically you could bust track with a well placed shot , but you would have to hit a linkage bolt (good luck), and that would only disable the beast. Anyway the Army tens to shy away from blowing there tanks up, they usually use older tank shells from bygone eras, and you'll never see an M-16 shoot on those ranges.

| Senior Member | Well AP there spelled it out so what I say is not a chance in HELLo. I was on a Bradely in the first gulf war and many tanks in our TF had RPG holes in the exhaust area and would still run. NO,NO,NO M16 miles gear cannot set of a tanks miles gear. |
