Flash Hider Removal question

i got a springfield M1a Loaded package. i want to remove the postban flashhider and put a Pre ban one on with a bayo lug.

couple questions...

do i need to get a National Match FH? (since i got the loaded package)

who has the lowest price for a preban FH with bayo lug?

and Final question... how do u take the FH off? do i need any special tools besides teh allen wrench? do i need to buy another castle nut???

TIA

If you reside in California, DO NOT TAKE OFF THE MUZZLE BRAKE, OR INSTALL A FLASH HIDER/SUPPRESSOR, because that makes it a Registerable Assault Weapon (and you can't register it (since January 1, 2000). A bayonet lug has never been a Characteristic that defines an Assault Weapon, in California. YES, we still have the California Assault Weapon Ban, and it won't go away any time soon.

If you can, get the package of tools, magazines, and sling that usually had been offered at a reduced price when you purchase a loaded M1A. Buy all of the Tools that they offer, magazines, and slings too. You won't find them at a lower price, than the "Reduced Price", but if they do not have a reduced price, then you need to bite the bullet and get at least one full set of tools.

You will need the Allen Wrench, and the Castle Nut Pliers that you can purchase from Springfield (the package of tools).

ok, let me try again.............................

i did say i have a Postban with a Flash hider, NOT muzzlebreak.

and if you are from california.. then you should know from sept 94- dec 99 you could've bought a M1a with a flash hider and 20rd mag minus bayo lug.

hence post 94.

i bought it in california back in 99.

it is REGISTERED as an AW in CALIF under SB23 with CA DOJ.

with the FEDERAL AWB expired.. i would like to take off that POST BAN FLASH HIDER (NOT MUZZLEBREAK) off and install a PRE94 FLASHIDER WITH BAYONET LUG.

NOT that a bayo lug constitutes and AW in California.

and YEH, i got all the discounted items from springfield with the Loaded coupon. only thing i didnt get is their 3rd generation scope mount. i got a brookfield instead.

i even bought their 20rd mags back in 99 with their discount coupon for $50 each , when i coulda bought it from coles distributing for $35.

if the price is right,, i probably get a pistol grip / folding stock from fulton armory too. since my M1 is a Registered AW i can do anything i want with it.

OK, since it is registered, the Flash Suppressor is OK either with or without the bayonet lug.

The Brookfield scope mount is the best.

A bit of detail to answer the original question - or part of it anyway. There is a small set screw that comes in from the front just below the front sight post and is set at an angle down toward the castled nut. Loosen the set screw out until the top is at least flush with the hole as the set screw usually locks inside one of the "grooves" on the top of the nut. Before trying to loosen the castled nut, soak it in penetrating oil - or Break Free for a bit then, using the proper pliers, loosen the nut. The nut is "captured" so the flash hider will move forward as you loosen and remove the nut. Grip the pliers tightly and really watch it, these nuts can be really tight so it's easy to let the pliers slip and scratch the baby.
