I'm back - Got a few questions, Help me :-)

Hey everyone, I'm back from my internet disappearing act, sometimes it's good to unplug these things and pretend it's the year 1960, even though I wasn't alive back then.

Anyways, I've got a few questions, let's see what you experienced gun lovers know :assult:

1) I got a Remington 870 Express, with less then 50 rounds in it, on 3 inch shells, I load 3 of them, and the first 2 extract fine, the 3rd, was a pain, this was when I first shot it, I just shot it tonight, it's the same case, but this one wouldn't come out no matter what. The gun is of course rated for 2 3/4 and 3" shells, It happens with both Winchester and Federal 3" shells, I can slide it back slightly and just enough to see the ending of the shell and the metal catch on the extracter catching the shell, but it will not go any further, I have no problems with 2 3/4, I finally had to bang the gun on the ground vertically, pointed way away from my head of course, and it popped out. The shell almost looks like it's tip is crimped, not sure if that has anything to do with the extraction. Is there a break in period or another person with same problem? I'd hate to send it to Remington, !!!! I hate shipping things.

2) SKS Magazines, oh god, here we go, SKS, aka a money pit. A fun gun to shoot, when your magazine works right. The 10 rd factory works perfect, my brother owns a older sks magazine bought years ago, 30 round, works great. I bought a 30 round and the spring is just like.. It's strange, It might be the ammo but I doubt it, it basically has no tension, or not much, I mean, It gives pressure while loading, but when the bullets are in there, it basically shoots one, and the other one just sits there, not throwing them up, and they are somewhat loose, some bullets have pressure on them, some don't. I'm going to send it back (SHIPPING, Aghh), but does anyone know a website with quality magazines in the 20-30 round capacity range that work nice with the SKS?

3) Best cleaning method for a handgun, I do all the parts I possible can get to, but the trigger springs, and basically the entire frame below the slide, is a pain to get to, and I feel like throwing it in a container filled with Hoppes #9 or bore cleaner of somesort, but I know them springs need oil and whatnot, anyone got a good, safe method to keep handguns, and all guns for that matter, nice and clean?

I guess that is it for now, Besides the fact I want someone who has shot a pistol that is accurate to 25 yards with open sights, open eyes, no tricks or gimmicks, and what is this pistol? I got my 0-15 yard pistol with me, but I'll be purchasing one real soon, I hear the 1911 from Springfield, the 1911 from Smith and Wesson, someone here tell me what they know, and what they hold, which makes a good group @ 25 yards with the least effort :-)

I have the same shotgun and never loaded a 3 inch magnum in it..sorry couldn't help you there

my SKS has never had a problem with the 10 round magazine..never fixed it 'cause it wasn't broke

As to the shotgun - just a hunch, but see if it has the round follower in the magazine. It could've gotten lost while cleaning, and the previous owner slapped the spring back in without it. Could be the spring gripping that last shell.
Or is not ejecting AFTER firing? A different thing altogether.

The SKS magazine sounds like a worn spring. Sometimes it can be stretched longer to give more tension, but this would eventually weaken it more. I'd try another one. I've always disliked the 30-rounders - the factory ten-rounder is much more reliable.

Gotta admit - I seldom strip a pistol completely to clean & oil the trigger parts. If it gets to feeling gritty, I'll try spraying it out with WD40 or a good bore cleaner, then dribbling in some oil. If it does get really gunky, then strip it.

You need to define "accurate at 25 yards". For me using a service type pistol, this is about a fist-sized group. My Colt 1991, Ruger Security Six and other service handguns will do this. Any better would require mucho accurizing, then the guns tend to get less reliable and more quirky. I want to keep the solid reliability, in case I have to use it for defense.

Regarding SKS detachable mags, there comes a point when you just decide to ditch all the tactical gear, restore it as a fine fixed mag stripper fed wooden stocked WWII era rifle, and buy an AK for high capacity rapid fire.

I drop my handgun frames in a gallon paint can full of Ed's Original Red bore cleaner. The transmission fluid seems to lubricate pretty well after all the gunk floats off.
I think I got the recipe for Ed's Original Red off this website, but I'm not positive. It's 1 qt kerosene, 1 qt transmission fluid, 1 qt something else, and 1 qt something else. I wrote the formula on top of the can, but the can is in the shed. I THINK one of the other components is acetone, and maybe the last is mineral spirits? If you search for Ed's Original Red you'll find it - in a zenlike turn of phrase.

Very true on the 30 round, I just though I'd give it a try, I know lots of people with no problems with them, I'm in a room full of Hoppes Bore cleaner smell, I got a quart of it, yes, a quart, for around $13 off of www.cheaperthandirt.com and filled a tupperwear (cheap, disposable plastic kind) and filled it, only took like 1/8 of the quart, soaking each guns barrels, springs, etc etc, anything internal and needs cleaning, tooth brushing it off, oiling what needs it, wiping and reassembling.
I think all this hoppes got me feeling a little buzz, oh well!

Big dog, the Rem. 870 is brand new from Walmart, and it fires 2 3/4 all day long, but on 3" shells, after I eject 2 already fired shells, or 1, whatever, one is stubborn and just doesn't want to come out, you can see it trying, but you come to a point where you don't want to force anything.

Battle, I'm debating taking off the monte carlo stock and restoring it with bayonet and all :-)

and Habak, that seems like some intense cleaner, I'll turn my Baby Eagle chrome with that recipe!! hahaha.. seriously though, I bet it works like a charm, never, ever heard of Transmission fluid. Brake cleaner, oven cleaner, heard it all, but that's amazing. I'll give it a try if nothing like hoppes works.

anyways, I'm off the computer, going to go get some fresh air, well, it's not fresh because I'm in the city and cars driving down my street every 20 seconds make the air raunchy, but anyways

Thank you again, love yalls input, keep me informed if you hear anything about the 870, I plan on hunting with it soon, hate to miss me a buck because the !!!! 3" shell won't come out, cause then I'll do something stupid and jump down from the tree stand with my military spec survival knife and go chasing

FWIW, Brownell's sells Ed's Red pre-mixed. No-muss, no-fuss! www.brownells.com "course they want $8.00\4 oz but what do you need with 37 gal. of bore cleaner anyway, right? (o.k., it's not 37 gal., but it's a bunch if you use the actual formula!)

Well I guess I'll throw mine in to:
The 870- I have had one for many years now (it is my first and only shot gun, I don't see a need for another) and have shot 3' shells like crazy through it. It loves the 3' slugs. I have haven't had any problems at all out of this gun. You might consider at least talking to a gunsmith about it. I hate shipping costs too and would hate to ever send a rifle back to a manufacture.

The SKS- I have only had mine for about 2 or 3 months now and love it to death. An awesome and fun rifle, almost like a big 10/22. Although I have only had mine for a short period, my friends have had them for a while. One had the opposite problem with the 30 round mag, the spring was so strong it would only fit about 15 or 20 max. Needless to say it fed great, but you couldn't get all 30 in it. Like eveyone has said though, the original set up is just about perfect fot the SKS.

Pistol- I have yet to actually group mine, but I have shot clays with my brothers Ruger MkII 22 target barrel at 100 yards. I would guess a full clip would put us on about 8' to a foot. If you want a good semi 22 the MkII is a killer pistol.
