| Super Moderator ![]() ![]() | New Boston, MO...and where may that be? I've lived in MO for the last 40 years and that's a new town to me. Of course I'm on the western side and that may be along the eastern edge along the "Big Wide".

| Super Moderator ![]() ![]() | 7Mmag6...could that coyote be a mix between dog and coyote? That car chasing has got to be against their natural fear factor instinct...unless there's some dog instinct it's brain, too.

| Senior Member | Are coyotes scavengers? I almost think so. Would it be legal/ethical to pop a coyote by using bait? I have 2 (that I know of) living near my house, and they seem very interested in my dogs' food. Last time I saw them, they were about 40 yds from my back door. Since then I have learned that they are vermin and could (should) be shot on sight. I keep either my Mosin-Nagant or my Schmidt Rubin by the back door now, but I think they know that. Haven't seen them since.

My wife was out in the yard last summer and one came up in the yard, looked at her, grabbed a chicken and ran off. Of course my Heeler took him out before he got out of sight. Mean little booger when he wants to be.The best bait I've found lately was a deer that got hung in the fence because it didn't jump high enough. They'd already killed it before I found it so I set up about 60 or 70 yards out and waited for them to get hungry. I was carrying my Yugo SKS which is usually a good coyote gun but i was trying some of that Chineese ammo they're letting in now and it failed to fire. I went back the next evening with my old faithful Remingtom 700 30-06 and got 2. But if you're wanting pure coyote hunting you need to approach it like a turkey hunt. Camo head to toe. The electronic calls are good. I use a diaphhragm turkey call you can make howls & rabbit squeals, they'll come in to turkey sounds too. The thing to remember about coyotes is, they don't always let you know they're coming. More often than not they'll just run in before you know what's happening. If they are running in you can stop them with a bark. Hope this helps you. I try to kill every one I see. They're hell on the Quail and Turkey population. |

| Senior Member | Another question: As I am loath to shoot something and just let it lay, is there aything a person can do with a coyote after changing his staus from temporary to permanent? I am certainly not going to eat them, but I suppose their pelts are worth something, no?

| Senior Member | here's what you do. I shoot Coyotes on BLM land north of barstow in California. Here's how to shoot coyotes in the scrub desert. you get a stinky wet dog food like pedegree, make sure it has fish oil in it. put it about 100-200 yards out in a bowl or plate by game trails about an hour after dusk. crack 3 or 4 green glow sticks and toss them around to get a nice low ambient around the target area. wait. I use a ruger mini-30 with a 20" fluted bull barell and a 3-9 x 40 simmons. Whatever ammo is clever. have fun. BTW, there is a "legacy" coyote law in california. for every coyote pelt you deliver to the governor, he must pay you 5 dollars. Now, go out and make Arnie happy. |

I bet they would repeal that law the next day if 10000 hunters showed up wit a pelt demanding payment. Talk about Peta getting riled up. | |
