Dennis, I'm picking up my Bulgie today (darned Cali waiting period). Saw a Russian or two on gunbroker the other day but they were pretty high priced.

got it and I love it although the double action is pretty heavy. I don't have big hands & it fits pretty well and I was practicing disengaging the safety and cocking the hammer for SA as fast as possible (not that I would do it in a stress situation - would just pull the !!!! trigger hard enough). Should try it out this weekend. Need better grips - anything else I should be aware of (CZ-52 like issues ?) or does it work well out of the box ?

out of the box it is just fine.
the only issue that I would even mention would be carry it with the safety engaged if you are rideing a motorcycle.

my buddy asked me what kinda small automatic pistol to buy I recomended a Mak
he got one
he had allways wanted a shoulder holster so he could be just like the guys on TV
he got one of those too.
he was carrying his mak in his shoulder holster, loaded hammer down safety off.
he hadnt noticed the snap was un snapped he got on his bike (with ape hanger handlebars)
was going 70 mph down the highway
the gun fell out............
landed on the hammer..............
the tremendous force of the impact shattered the sear that was holding the hammer back in the rebound safety position. The hammer hit the pin and the gun fired.
adding the recoil impulse to the "bounce" caused the pistol to go up about a hundred and fifty feet in the air go across the highway land twirling and skittering on the pavement for for about a hundred yards stopping in some tall weeds.
they brought it to me like a wounded puppy, I had the responsibility to to tell them that it was beyond repair.
it was like his dog had died.

the safety issue was that the rebound hammer safety was defeated by a tremendous blow to the hammer.
If the safety had been on it may not have fired
I wouldnt want to take bets on that but thats my theory.
of course ANY firearm that was subjected to the titanic forces that that Mak was that day may have fired. Its hard to tell.
kinda like the planets alighning
it Does happen on occasion.
The Mak is the best buy in the pistol market in America today.
I carry mine ALL the time.
besides I like haveing former Communist Bulgarian secret police pistols.
Its concrete proof we won the cold war.........

I have told this story several times here on this forum.
Enjoy your new makerov
