just brought home a Japtalian type1 rifle, came with cleaning rod, bayonet(no scabbard) and 40 rds of Norma ammo. for 3 c-notes.

back in the 1930's the Italian's produced some 60,000 rifles for the Jap Navy. these were Carcano actions modified to use a Mauser type of magazine with the push button floor plate. and stocked in the typical Jap manner, 2 piece butt stock and all Jap type stock metals.

the rifle is in overall excellent condition, bore is dark and very dirty, but should clean up easily.

I know you made a typo but the rifle you are talking about is a type ( letter I ) not ( the number1) which is a test type 38 with a folding stock. Enjoy your rifle

thanks Dana i appreciate it, sometimes its hard to tell the difference between I and 1. Dana do you know if these are supposed to have the 'Mum on the receiver ring, there is none on this rifle.

Honorable Gunrunner-san, it is the 6.5, the stock still has the Gehsia smell

Sorry no "Mums". But not a bad rifle. Mine (3) are in better shape than my best Jap made. I have 50+ Japs. The type I's look like Carcanos on steroids

as i stated in the beginning, i got the rifle, bayonet, and 20 boxes of Norma.

the whole package was $300, was that a fair price, or did i get rooked??? i am happy with the deal. but i have never encountered any to get a guestimate on pricing them.

If you are happy no price is too much or too little. All Japs will price over a 100 to 200 differance depending on what part of the country you are in. I am lucky as no one likes them in my neck of the woods

around here, mil/surps are far and few between, and priced like rare and valuble collector items when any shows up.

the rifle is in really nice condition. the Norma ammo is probably worth $80.

Yup...both calibers are expensive...thats why I ditched the 7.7 Arisaka with ex. mum.

Hornady came out with 6.5 and 7.7 Jap. about $20 for a box of 20.

sure, its a buck a pop, but thats ok for occasional take to the range and shoot it once in a while. certainly can't fight a war at them prices though.

I was polishing up an Arisaka barrel-assy for bluing and was rather intrigued by the markings. About 10" from the crown I noticed a line on the barrel that looked like it was etched into the metal using a lathe. I whipped out my make-'em-biggers and saw toolmarks. It looks to me like this is a two-piece barrel screwed together. Anyone tell me what's up here as I am totally unfamiliar with this flavour of rifle. Is this usual?

I don't know anything about Japanese surplus so I'm probably talking bs, but maybe they were cut & then put together - made them easier for our guys to bring back ? I've heard of K98 stocks being cut up & put together.

Cutting a stock is one thing, cutting and joining a barrel is quite another matter. I am, quite frankly, puzzled as hell over this one.
