He'll be happy with a makorov... my dad could get a sig saur, .45, Beretta, amd glock to misfire by holding it real loose...but not the makorov...he has even tried to get it to misfire. But he couldn't. And the nice thing is it is 'ugly'(i actually think it is rather nice looking) so u dont have to worry about getting it dirty or scratched or anything. It is nice for concealed carry because it is small compact. A great self protection pistol, and who could beat the price. The only thing you should be sure to do is get rubber grips other wise you will definently start feeling it in your palm/ lower forearm. I have two, one with the nice rubber grips, and one with the really hard plastic grips(the one that will make you rather sore).

I have a Bulgarian Mak. It is an outstanding handgun. It is what I carry everyday. I would like to get some real comfortable grips. The best grips I ever had were on my PA-63. I went to Makerov.com, and I got what they called a "range grip" it was the one that most closley resembled, the ones on my PA-63. But the grip screw I have with the gun does not fit the grips, the head of the screw is too wide. The screw that came with the grips was supsoed to be for a Bulgarian model, it was too long and I had trubel with the magazine it would get held up on the screw. If the screw was tight to hold the grips in place, it interfeared with the magazine. I am looking for grips witha real pronounced thumb rest.

Hi Dennis:

Just got the green light today to post messages. It was a pleasure meeting you at Ben's (and Terry too)! I've been having fun checking out the Makarov site as you suggested and have placed two orders so far.

Will be checking with you on what is involved with a "trigger job" later on.

TTYS,

Phil

PS: Username Phil was taken so used my first name.

Thanks for warm welcomes !

Thanks for welcoming me aboard!

My first question to this Makarov section is: Is there still a place you can get good, used Bulgarian magazines? (Or am I two years too late)?

I see the new arsenal ones advertised on the Makarov Website for $12.50. I'm assuming this is a pretty good deal?

Any pointers, dealers, Websites greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Phil

Hello Phil, This is just Too Cool!!!!
As far as trigger jobs, I can do em
its an engagement angle thing. it is almost impossible to get a light crisp trigger on a mak like it is possible to get on a 1911
still vast improvement is possible if you have a stiff trigger.
I pack My mak as a CCW almost every day.
the Bulgarian Mags are fine so are the soviet, EG, Chinese, I havent seen much difference in any of them.
What i have done with the Mags that I pack is I have replaced the floor plates with the larger finger groove/extension floorplate
I originally had 4 magazines with the brass floorplates untill "Somebody" forgot they had 2 of them in her purse and went through the x ray at the airport.....
they didnt freak out too bad (Thank you Jesus) but we never got them back.
I just reciently recieved and installed two of the new plastic extended floor plates on two standard magazines. they say they need fitting so the floor plates can fit feg pa63
AND Makerovs................
Well, I fitted and they worked out but I have to admit I am rather proficient at fitting and the job seemed a little beyond most average people.
To bad the way cool brass ones arent avalible any more.
the up graded magazines that Makerov.com sells with the wolff springs and polished interior are nice and ready to rock.
but kinda expensive.
the standard mags for 12 bucks
it aint bad I guess.
buy a couple at a time untill you have a bunch and have forgotten how much they cost.
Thats what I have done..........

Welcome Phil this is going to be fun.

Hey Phill:
The websites are cool, but I like to buy hands on. You should try your local gun show. There is always a few tables that just sell magazines. You have to spend a littel time looking but usually it comes out cheeper, especially without the shipping charges. I have never been to a gun show that did not have all sorts of AK-47 stuff, and Makerov stuff. Part of owning a Mak, as I have found; is that you are always looking for mags, and grips.

Thanks for Mak advice!

Thanks Dennis, Future Marine, and Azguy.

Rec'd my first order from Makarov.com yesterday and converted one magazine with finger rest extension floorplate (worked fine). Ordered two new mags also @$12.50.

Going to have a friend reload for me as soon as I buy some dies. Thinking of the Lee dies at Makarov.com - any better suggestions - (like RCBS taper dies)?

Probably invest in Pearce grips later on, same as a trigger job. Heck, haven't even been out to the range yet!

It's nice to get advice from those that have "broke the trail" already.

Thanks to all for input & advice!

Phil

if your going to do the reloading thing, i would reload them yourself. even if it means spending time on your friends press. never trust someone elses reloads.

Phil I havent a clue as to reloading
I like the milsurp stuff and S&B too
S&B seems to be the best Makerov ammo ever
Well may be not Ever but I have been shooting Maks for about 20 years.
I remember the green box, copper washed chinese ammo
the "metaka" soviet ammo (16 rounds per tiny box)
now that we have choices I buy S&B, and I have some "silver bear" that I got on sale
it still seems cheaper to buy cheap milsurp/bulk Makerov Ammo
The situation Phil, is brass.
Most makerov Ammo is steel cased
S&B is not
buy a case (or as much as you can) of S&B ammo shoot it up and gather the cases
I will now start saveing mine too.
When you have a pile of brass then maybe we can reload some cartriges together?
I am not convinced that it is more economical to reload,
but if you want to do it Ill help.

On another matter
Mak .com has wolff recoil springs that may be a good cheap investment
I have some fancy sights on my mak that Angie (sight man in kent)did
If and when you feel the need to "enhance" your mak Let me know
I have a BUNCH of parts, grips and general stuff that acumulates over time.

Mak Magazines

Last night, I ordered two more from buymilsurp.com (as you suggested I check out). They were $10.00 per, plus $7.00 shipping & handling.

If they look as good as the Mak armory mags, I might even snag a couple more.

Thanks for pointing me to this Website!

Stopped in to chat with Terry a couple minutes today. I have a good friend that is going to reload for me. I have two friends that do this for me, now if I could just get out to Cascade a little oftener!

My health issues have slowed me down in this area too. Anyway, I ordered some of those semi-wadcutters from Makarov and they look like they will be OK.

Going to order some Starline Brass from Midway and also some Hornady XTP bullets. Plan to go to Tacoma this weekend and get my friend to show me what he needs for his reloading press.

He's a friend of John Welcher (Welcher's Gun Shop), so that doesn't hurt any either. < smile >

I've talked to Angie twice, and was going to have him put 3 dot sights on my Combat Commander - biut I never followed through. Think I'll take your advice on the mag springs. I like the looks of the finger rest extensions, so more of them is a given.

Be glad to share whatever when I get up to speed. My two shooting friends are pretty savvy, so I think this is going to all work out great!

Phil

Looks like I better join the Washington Arms Collectors again. I was a member for awhile years ago before I retired from the Boeing Company. There was too much politics involved for me during this time (and) between this and working so much overtime, I never got to the big shows thay have at the Puyallup Fairgrounds (close to Tacoma).

My Gun Club buddy goes all the time, so maybe I'll ride down with him and check out the Mak stuff - good idea!
