Civil War reenactments

Or as we call it in the South. The war against northern aggression.
Anybody ever been to a reenactment?
Anybody collect C.W. weapons or relics?

I don't do Civil War, but I do Revolutionary War re-enacting as a Continental Dragoon.

It's pretty different from Civil war, but quite fun.

They don't do Revolution around these parts so I've never been to one but I bet they are fun. I have been to quite a few C.W. and they are a blast. Always wanted to be in one but never did. I do (or rather did) collect C.W. weapons and relics. Have dug quite a few of my own. Have found stuff to make you sit back and wonder. have also found stuff that just makes you say HUH!!! How tha Hell did that get there?????

Rev War has a very different culture, it's a time when America was individuating itself in the world but also needing to step up to being as good as other nations in order to make it on our own. You see a huge mix of high and low culture, ragged clothes and fancy clothes. We have representations of European soldiers who took one side or another, plenty of British regulars, Loyalist Americans who fought for the Crown, American regular troops (who started as little more than militia but grew into a proud and disciplined fighting force), American Militia (Continental and Loyalist), and Native Americans allied with both sides (but usually British.)

Along the lines of Civil War re-enactment: I'm reading Harry Turtledove's series of alternative history books, that are based on the premise that the south was successful in breaking away. As a Georgia boy, great-great grandson of a Confederate soldier, let me say :"If that's the way things would have worked out, then THANK YOU GOD FOR ULYSSES S GRANT!"

I don't think that's how things would have went had the south actually won. But that's just my opinion. For anyone with an interest in it or anyone that thinks the war was fought over slavery should read The South Was Right by
James Ronald Kennedy,Walter Donald Kennedy.

We have a yearly Civil War re-enactment here in March - The Battle of Natural Bridge. It's in the community of Wooodville, about 10 miles south of Tallahassee. It commemorates the day a bunch of 'old men and boys' gathered to drive off the Yankees. Two of the Yankee units were "Colored", with white officers. They acquitted themselves well, but WE won!
Tallahassee remained the only Confederate Capitol never taken by the Yankees. Unfortunately, by the time of this battle, the enemy simply bypassed us and took the port of St. Marks, an important objective. The war was already all but over.
A neighbor of my younger days is Colonel of the local Rebel battalion, and is one of the organisers of the re-enactment. Folks come into town Thursday and Friday, set-up camp (living as they did 'back then') and ready the grounds for the battle. Laying out the charges for the mock cannon battle, and establishing how the Yankees will approach.
The public can visit the camp on Saturday and talk with the folks involved. The battle takes place Sunday afternoon.
If I were to get into it, I'd be a Reb of course - easier to put together the kit.
The Yankee boys have to follow more stringent regs on clothing, gear and weapons. Much more expensive too!

It's something I always wanted to do but there were no units close to me and the ones that I talked to about joining said you had to outfit for both sides making the expense almost double. At the time it was about $1.000.00
just to outfit for the south. I really liked going to them tho especially Corinth where you stood directly behind the union batteries. Even fired at half charges with no ball those 12 pound Napoleons were loud! We stood so close to them we were getting hit with the friction primers as they were expelled from the guns.

They seldom do. They're only advertised locally and not much at that. They were going to put on the biggest one ever in Shiloh Tn., even bigger than the one in the movie Gettysburg but they had tornado warnings the day it was going to take place. The warning came in an hour before the battle. They had people in from all over the world to see it and the boys in blue from up north got scared and left. They had this huge field with artillery lined up hub to hub all the way across it and they were loaded for the battle and this big ol 30 lb. Parrot rifle right in the middle (rifled cannon firing a 30 lb projectile) The only way to unload them was to fire them and that in itself was awsum. When that Parrot went off it shook the ground hard enuff to make you miss a step.
The local boys and most of the rebs stayed and did a lil bit til it got to raining too hard. Man I hate they called it off.
