Custom gun use - good, bad choice?

I've been looking into an affordable 308 milsurp, and found this on a search:

Wondering if this is a severe bubba-ing travesty, if it's safe, and if that's a good deal.

Also wondering if the Arisakas are related to the Mausers or anything else. Not familiar with them at all.

G3, I too have been asking for info on these rifles, but it seems that there is no fount of knowledge about them on this forum. I must assume that those who fired them did not live to tell of their experience.

I have no experience with the Japanese 'mauser' but I know Dana speaks very highly of their function and such.

It has been a long time since I have seen Jap conversions. After the War (II) many were made into 30/06 sporters. They are said to have some of the strongest actions of the day. Some were very well done but not as refined as Mausers.

My first milsurp was a Jap 7.7 it got stolen along with a couple of Ger. Mausers. I shot the gun a lot and it was a good shooter. reliable and accurate. I never thought the action was that strong tho......or do you just want it for tha manlicker (as advertised) stock?

P.O.Ackley said it was the strongest action when he did his blow up tests many years ago. it cocks on closing. if ya can live with that, then get it.

Been doing a lil reading up on it and it is a strong action except for the ones made late in the war.

Good rifles, and they are recognised as a Mauser type action. Stay away from the late-war 'Last Ditch' rifles for anything but a wall-hanger, but the pre-war and early war rifles are strong.
Since it's already been converted, you won't be thought a Bubba. I've seen some very nice sporters built on this action. :right:

Good price for a decent hunting rifle in an excellent caliber.

Just a lil harder to close is all and that can be changed to cock on opening. It's a nice rifle and prolly a very good shooter to boot I say go for it. Not real crazy about the safety setup but it works.

Have you found anything mentioning two-piece barrels on the late-war Arisakas? I polished one up for bluing (customer's idea, not mine) and came across a join in the barrel about 10 inches from the crown. Any info?

hounddawg, try asking the guys at parallax bills milsurplus forum (google search: parallax bill) - plenty of knowledgable Japanese rifle collectors there. DANA here should know but he doesn't seem to check the board as often as he used to.

Hounddawg, I've seen it mentioned somewhere before, prolly on another forum but I've never seen one or known of one personally. I'm by no means an authority on Jap or any other milsurp rifles.

I can't find anything on two piece barrels but offer this to look into. Check the barrel to see if it is rifled the full length. What may be the rifle was a smooth bore and a rifled barrel stub was added as a last ditch workup???? Any type of conversion was tried at the end of the War using what ever they had on hand. I.E. mixing all diffrent types of mod actions and barrels trying to get anything that could be used in a pinch

My cousin has a 7.7 and he can not find any rounds for it. He saw something on the internet, BUT it was 1.25 a round!!!! I have heard that they are unreliable, and not too accurate.

No surplus ammo anywhere but I 'think' Grafs sells commercial by Hornady..check them out.

Saw one at a quasi local shop for $225 in 308. I'm guessing it was a rechambering but I really don't know. It still cocked on closing but the safety was changed to a thumb safery.
