springfield 1903

just recieved a 1903 which i believe to be an A1 as it has a c stock. barrel code shows 1931,and the serial is 1370225. my grandfather used this for match shooting as a cadet at NMMI. quik math says he would have been a cadet in the 30's. the overall condition is quite remarkable. is there 30.06 ammo available and would this gun be safe to fire today? any info i can gather would be appreciated. i intend to honor my grandpappy and NMMI in a presentation with the gun...
thanks

Check out the comments below made by Gyrene in an earlier thread on G&G. That seems to reflect the current thought on whether a 1903 A1 is safe or not. You should note that Springfield 03A3's with serial numbers below what is shown in his post probably should be considered "wall hangers." Otherwise, you might want to have a gunsmith examine it carefully to advise you on it's fitness to shoot.
