is there any thing that can be done to a stock savage trigger,short of replacing it, that can lighten the pull.

Try here for adjustment instructions, Savage trigger adjustment It says that it's for the 110 series rifles, but the triggers on the model 12 are the exact same thing, as are most of the Savage centerfire triggers. The only thing that the article doesn't cover that should be mentioned is the safety adjustment screw. The safety adjustment screw is the most rearward (towards the butt) allen head screw on the bottom of the trigger assembly (there are two screws, but the front one is for overtravel). The safety adjusment screw (the rear one) is one of the secrets to getting a good Savage trigger adjustment. If the safety screw is too loose, the rifle can fire even with the safety engaged

. If the safety adjustment screw is too tight, you won't be able to move the safety on and off. The safety adjustment screw should be tight enough that the safety can be moved on and off, but no more. You should feel some resistance as you slide the safety on and off.
