Judge Orders St. Augustine To Fly Gay Pride Flags

I swear Florida is getting ALMOST as weird as Calf

Judge Orders St. Augustine To Fly Gay Pride Flags

POSTED: 11:57 am EDT June 8, 2005
UPDATED: 12:42 pm EDT June 8, 2005

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- For the next six days, 49 rainbow flags will flutter on the Bridge of Lions after a three-year battle by gay rights organizations.

U.S. District Judge Henry Lee Adams Jr. ruled Tuesday against the city in a suit filed by the Rev. Ruth Jensen and Vicki Waldon of the St. Augustine Pride Committee, Equality Florida and the National Center for Lesbian Rights. The city rejected a request last month to fly the flags for a week of gay-pride events.

Adams said the organization would suffer "irreparable harm and loss if they are prohibited from flying their rainbow flags during the week of the annual gay pride celebration." The pride committee must pay permit fees of $295.

Jensen, who has been fighting for three years to fly the flags, was told by city officials that the bridge was reserved for groups of historical significance.

She was pleased with the ruling, and the flags were ready for display starting Wednesday.

"It goes to affirm for us the importance of following through and not accepting a decision that we don't believe is right," she said.

In its most recent request to fly the flags, the pride committee told city commissioners that the flags would commemorate the 1566 murder of a homosexual man in the St. Augustine area.

City Commissioner Errol Jones said the city did not plan to appeal the judge's ruling.

Thumbs down

I find the sight of 'Gay Pride Flags' very offensive. But then, I'm not a 'protected minority' so my views are of no consequence.

'Equal Rights' does not mean 'shove it into everyone's face'!

'Nuff Said. :smash:

You must really "love freedom" :right:
Everyone is a lot of people, and
flying the flag in some city in florida
for the week of some parade can't be
shovin' it into everyone's face.

Exclamation

St. Augustine is a very popular tourist attraction - folks come from all over the nation, and even the world - so yeah, it is 'everyone'! And the last thing they want is some small but all-too-vocal special interest group pushing their left-wing agenda in their faces.
I don't care how they live their lives, but it doesn't belong on the city streets. This isn't even an 'equal rights' issue. How would the citizens of San Francisco feel if a large group of southern hunters came and paraded thru their streets with their guns shouldered, and a few freshly shot deer carcasses proudly shown? Hey, don't hunters have 'equal rights' too?

Personally, i see nothing pridefull about being part of such a filthy lifestyle. I think thier flag represents evil and disgusting behaviour. Tampa suffers from this same problem..as does Orlando. I think, if they love the symbol of filth so much, what's wrong with the confederate flag? And yes big Dog, it is in your face! That's how they like it! Just disgusting!

I'm sure they'd probably act the same way the St. Augustine folk did,
and after three years, the hunters would get their parade (and I'd come down to see this one).

Has anyone noticed that there are a bunch of ad banners for gays and lesbians after the first post?
