New 98...Maybe

Was up to the inlaws today and went out to th storage room with "pop" looking for some pipe fittings and saw a rifle over in the corner. I couldn't get over to it for all the junk in the way but it looks like a KAR 98 in a Bubba'd military stock. I asked what he'd take for it and he said he hadn't really thought about getting rid of it but he didn't need it cuz he can't hunt anymore. I'll prolly wind up with it. Just what I need another project! But maybe I do need an open sighted rifle and I do have a factory Mauser sporter stock it would look really good in and I can always narrow the trigger guard, change out the wing safety, change the trigger. Oh boy, here we go again!!!
Or maybe if it's all original and matching I can restore it. :right:

Sounds like it would be a great restoration project, matching #s or not. Shame it was bubba'd to begin with. Let us know if you end up with it, and share pics so we can help identify stuff about it.

No doubt. I've got two already an F.N. 98 and a Smith Corona O3A3. Pics posted somewhere if they're still up. If I get it I'll try to get some pics up before I do anything "rash"

Many nice sporters are built on wartime Mauser actions. Just keep in mind, that when done 'right', it won't be a cheapo project. Brownell's has all you'd need, but you'll sure pay 'em some money for it! :nod:

Big Dog, don't I know it! Like I said I have a F.N. 98 and a Smith Corona O3A3 I had sported out the yin yang. But they look very good and shoot better than anyone would believe. The 98 has 26 inch Obermeyer sporter barrel mounted in a bedded and floated H&R Ultra stock with Rosewood forend tip and grip cap. Bold trigger with side safety. The bolt has been reworked with a new Handle and a new shroud. Bolt handle and shroud were left polished in the white in deference to it's military origins. The stripper clip hump was ground off to use two screw scope mounts
The O3 has a S.S 26 inch 8 groove fluted Mike Stone medium target barrel mounted in a bedded and floated laminated Fajen beavertail target stock. It has a Timney trigger. The bolt has been reworked with a new handle, new spring and a titanium firing pin. This one is capable of putting five bullets in a very slightly egg shaped hole at 500 yds. Unfortunately I'm not that good. I can do it at 100 tho but it spreads out with me a lil beyond that. I can keep them all in one hole at 500 but it's a lil more than egg shaped. LOL!!!

Rebel727 you say you have a Smith Corona 03A3,well I was at Cabelas today and saw one that was completly number matching,shiny like new bore and in allround good condition for $729 and was wondering if that would be a good deal and if not I think i'm going to grab the M1 Garand that they had in the backroom.

I don't know how the prices run on original Smith's. Mine was an action only that I bought off my gunsmith several years ago and built into a target/sporter. Seems kinda high to me but I'm sure someone here can steer you right.

$1100.00 for a Garand????? Whatsit made out of Silver n Gold? Last one I looked at in a pawn shop was $400.00 It was nice and all matching. Hasn't been THAT long ago either. JCOAS!!!!!

Got my Mauser today. Embarrassed to say it's not a 98 KAR, not even a 98. It's a Spanish 96 in 7mm. BUT, in my defense I only saw a 3/4 view from the bottom across a small room. I could see the bent bolt and single step in the barrel and wing safety and he SAID it was 8mm. Oh well, it was still a freebie just disappointing. Never look a gift horse in the mouth and never turn down a free gun. I'll try to shoot it tomorrow, got a box of shells with it.

Everyone I've talked to who own the 7mm Mausers love them! It's rare to find one for sale, they are so sought after. An excellent hunting cartridge, not nearly as punishing in recoil, but plenty of power for deer.
If you want to shoot a lot, it's a good candidate for reloading!

Rebel727 ive got a model 96 Spanish 7mm that has been sporterized that i found up at my grandparents old lake house that is in excellent condition. The barrel is a little worn but the head spacing is fine and shoots perfectly fine only it isn't very accurate and sometimes the bullet gets stuck in the internal magazine. But anyways they"re great guns and if your looking for a good Model 98k mauser look at the russian captures that have suddenly flooded the market. And the Garand was a 1943 all matching in brand new conditionthat had to be shipped in from a cabelas in South Carolina or something.

7 mm is ok. Just not crazy about the Spanish guns with their weak recievers. I've got a 96 in .308 that's being customized now because it shot so far off I couldn't hit paper at 50 yds. Don't think this one is going to be any better, the front sight is bumped to the left as far as it will go and remain on the gun. Wasn't "looking" for anything just saw it and inquired about it. My father in law finally got around to digging it out and gave it to me. Still haven't fired it but I don't think it's going to impress me.
Still seems like a lot of money for a Garand.

Well I fired the sucker today. Wouldn't feed. Hit my target but it failed to extract. Had to drive the empty out of the chamber. Inspection of the empty divulged deep scratches in the neck. Tried to get it to extract a live round, nope. Live round does fall out with a little shake. Closer inspection of fired case looks like rifling grooves in the neck. Comparison of fired case and unfired case show no change of specs cept for normal expansion of the neck. Can't figure this one out.
