First you want to level the gun in a braced position, sand bag or clamp the rifle pointed at the target area, and make sure it's level left & right, looking through the bore with the bolt removed, or useing a bore mirror, point the rifle at the centre of the target. Check to be sure the rifle is level, left and right, put the mount in place and secure, put the scope in the mount and check the scope for level left and right.
If you're useing Millitt mounts that can be adjusted for windage try to get both mounts the same by useing a verneer calibre. With Weaver mounts they only tighten to the rail from one side.
I put a light coat of weapon oil on the rings before mounting the scpoe.
Next, check the bore to be sure you're still looking at the target, then look through the scope to see where the cross hairs are, adjust the scope to bring the reticle to the point that you're looking through the bore at. This should get you on the paper.
Useing the bench rest or sand bags, fire 3 shots at the target, you should have a small group, adjust the scope reticle to bring the group to the point of aim.
When useing Weaver rings that tighten from only one side around the scope tube you may find the tube will turn toward the screws, putting in a couple of degrees of list away from the screws may be required to make the scope level after the screws are tightened.
