Introduce myself

i am new here and new to shooting so i thought i'd introduce myself. My name is Ryan and i am 20 years old and i just took up shooting. my grandfather passed away from lung cancer on x-mas eve of 2k4 and i inherited his single shot bolt action 22. it was fun to go shoot it for a while but i decided to give it to my dad because of the sentemental value. yesterday i bought a Ruger 10/22 with black stock and stainless barrel. i took it shootign today and really enjoyed it. i look foward to modifying it to suit my needs. i just wanted to say hi to all of you and i look foward to learning a lot from you. ~Ryan

If there's one gun that lends itself to mods it's a 10/22. The accessories for it are overwhelming. Plus it's a great shooter out of the box. Good choice and welcome to the forums.
Just out of curiosity, what was the single shot?

Hi Bluetruck99 Welcome to the group, I am sure you will find many interesting threads on this forum, even some about guns and game. Anything in particular you want to do to your ruger, like maybe a long range varmint gun?

Welcome!

Here is what your ruger 10/22 will look like after you get the bug .....only the receiver & trigger housing is original, and I stripped the paint off of those!!

1st. ^ that is a nice looking gun. i think a gun like that gets props before you even put holes into anything. but i do have a question- the metal thing hanging down in front of the trigger guard, is that an extended mag release?
i am looking to make a dependable gun for plinking and short-medium range target shooting. (maybe long range eventually but i'm not that great of a shot yet.) I'm not into hunting (not opposed to it just never been) but i would definatly kill any critter eating stuff in my vegetable garden. based on what you all said on the ruger forum i am looking into getting a new trigger, auto bolt release, ext. mag release, and a scope. im sure i won't stop there. its nice to meet all of you and i'm sure i'll lurk around and soak up as much info as i can about firearms.

Thanks on the project...yep, that is an extrended mag release hanging down.

Don't worry bout not hunting (for whatever reasons)..I don't hunt myself.
I shoot at a sweet 1,000 yard range where I can sit at a benchrest set-up, and don't have to worry bout gators or snakes....mostly either at 200 yards or at a 600 & 800 yard long range target (no, not with a .22 chuckle......I use a 7mm Remington Magnum for that)..and then some 50 and 100 yard spiner targets or golf balls with the .22's

Wanna know what may really help your accuracy and won't cost a dime?

Try shooting with and without the front barrel band (that holds the barrel to the stock), in about 90% of the cases it shoots better without it (it messes with the barrel vibration pattern)

also, don't get confused (a lot of new folks do)...replacing the "trigger" does not help much....replacing the HAMMER does help. the geometry involved between the trigger housing internal parts change when you replace the HAMMER. and in most cases will drop the amount of pull you must place on your trigger to make it fire from 8 or 9 pound to between 2 and 3 pounds.

Welcome!
Bob

bluetruck99, a belated welcome to G&G.

As Bob mentioned in another post feel free to ask all the questions you might have.

Between us all you're bound to get many opinions and some good advice in general.

In some respects, in this day and age of the cybernet, you are very fortunate to have so many pools to fish in and information at the tips of your fingers.

When I was growing up if your family or friends didn't have the answers it was usually the library or 'hit and miss' that you found your answers.

So...again....welcome!

Allo. I'm also new to the site, so I thought I'd just jump on the bandwagon and introduce myself. =)

I'm Hounddawg's daughter (the one who got in trouble at school for wearing a Barrett shirt) and I'm 15 years old. I'm not particularly new to shooting, but compared to most of you, I'm just a newb. The only type of weapon I haven't fired would fall into the range of artillery and full auto. I was bitten by the shooting bug when I was 13 and in South Africa when Hounddawg let me fire a clone of the Browning Match .22. From then I've fired probably every commercially available calibre, from air rifles to the 50 BMG. That's the fortune part of knowing people in gun smithing and having them trust you enough to do test firing. Hounddawg works parttime at a gunsmithing shop with a shooting range, and it was kind of put onto my shoulders to test fire/sight in the reparied weapons, unless of course Hounddawg thinks they're unsafe to fire, in which case he doesn't let me.

I'm still in school and I'm a member of the AFJROTC program. I can't decide whether to pursue a career in the military or as a wildlife journalist for magazines like NG. If I do go into the military, I want to go into the SpecOps units that require snipers, but I'm not sure how they would feel about a girl laying out people for the good of the greater community. If any of you read my post under Hounddawg's name in the Military Firearms - .50 Sniper Video, you would know that yesterday I fired a Barrett Model 99 and I am still in ecstasy over it, nor was it too bad of a shot. =)

I currently own four rifles and one pistol. I have a Colt .22 Match Pistol, a Crossman air rifle, a K31 (Schmidt Rubin) Karabiner 7.5x55, Spanish made Kentucky long rifle in .45 calibre, and a Hawken rifle in .50 calibre. That will be my muzzleloading hunting rifle and the K31 will be my centerfire hunting rifle.

I gues you could say that I'm pretty normal for a teenager, but I don't embrace any of the stupid liberal ideas of gun control and spending my life indoors like most of the pasty kids of today who sit glued to their tv's and computers. I don't know where I'm going to find a boyfriend who isn't pure white from lurking in the darkness of their rooms all day, little vampires with no backbone. -.- I'm very competitive and I've already won one competition (informal) with a borrowed .22 rifle of my grandfather's. I was the only person in my age group, so naturally I won that category hands down, and came in second to an old guy who was shooting an Anshutz and probably has been shooting over 45 years. I suspect that I beat most of the old guys, not because I shoot better, but because I see better. =D

I currently am working for the summer at a place called Dixie Woodworks. We make custom furniture, and practically anything else that is made with wood. My employers once made a whole kitchen outfit with suspended cabinets and it made an international woodworking magazine, so I guess I'm learning from the best. Right now I'm working on turnings for 10 chairs that will be going along with a 12 ft. dining room table, all made from quarter-sawn white oak. I've been working there for about 3 weeks, and I've only wrecked 2 pieces, which I guess it pretty good, seeing as I'm new to this.

Unlike most teenagers, I (at times) realize that I don't know everything and will sometimes follow the advice I ask you guys for. =P

Well...this is basically my story so far. It's not as long as most of yours, because, well, I'm still just a whelp. =D

Someone is 'listening'. LOL

Howdy and welcome Mini Dawg and bluetruck99 :right: Always glad to see new members introduce themselves right up front. Gets you off to a great start. But...you'll need weeks to learn about all the regulars on G&G.

Mini Dawg...I admire your spirit, enthusiasm and determination for your activities. And...I was interested in your latest job at the cabinet shop turning legs for furniture. Three weeks ago I was given an old wood lathe, Power Kraft (Montgomery Wards old brand), probably made around 1950 +/-, with capacities of 10" swing and 28" between centers. Since bringing it home I've totally disassembled every part that is possible to be taken apart and am in the process of totally reconditioning it to be returned as much like original as possible. That means it'll be painted gray and trimmed in red. I've had to remove more rust and grime than any power tool should ever have been allowed to accumulate...but hey...when I picked it up it was stored outside gathering dirt and moisture...not a good thing for sure. :insane:

Before stripping it down I tested it's operation and was able to turn a six inch nut bowl using the face plate and I turned a tool handle between centers. Everything seemed to work ok except the main headstock bearing, which I replaced.

Ok...nuff on wood turning...since this is a gun forum. I've got many hobbies since I'm a retired public high school teacher and later an adminstrator. When I was teaching I taught a variety shop courses, including wood working. Earlier in my career I also taught science courses as well as industrial education courses. I finished my career as director of operations of a large school district in the suburbs of Kansas City, MO and now I'm a full time volunteer of this and that, but spend one day each week, year around volunteering as a carpenter for Habitat For Humanity. My other interests are...tennis, babysitting with my grandkids, hunting, traveling, and of course collecting guns, and my wife and I have been married 44 years.

Ok...that's enough about me. Glad that you two have joined our group. Hope to see your posts in the future.

Ox :right:
