| 44Mag in a rifle?
I recently picked up a 44Mag Handi rifle. I have yet to shoot it, so I have been talking to a few people about having a 44Mag in a short rifle. What arre your thoughts on 44Mag chambered rifle? Pro's-Con's? I also need more info on the 44Mag.....? |

My Marlin 1984C in 44mag is my favorite gun (please don't tell my others). But to get the best out of a 44mag rifle you have to reload. Most 44mag shells are loaded to pistol specs, the rifles can take alot more

My buddy just got a Rossi .44 Magnum lever-action carbine. It's a nice gun, and proved very accurate out to 50 yards - we need to get it on the longer range to try it at 100 yards. His first handloads were mild, clocking 1150FPS in his 6" handgun and up to 1500 FPS in the carbine. Recoil was very managable. Winchester loads clocked 1700FPS, and kicked more. It'll work fine for deer down here.

1500-1700fps is what I have heard. I will start handloading in about 2 months. But untill then I have to slide on factory ammo.

Those are nice rifles I bought one for my wife two years ago(in.223) With the .44 Handloading is a must if you plan on hunting. Everything factory is thin jacketed pistol bullets. IMHO go with a Hornady 240 or300XTP or 265gr flatpoint. I use the 265 in my Rossi, I may try the 240XTP I love the round I have killed two deer with it.

From what I have heard the H&R 44Mag is sometimes over bored so many factory ammo isn't very accurate. I also hear that they like the 250-300gr bullets the best. But I do like the idea of getting some better velocities out of this round from a rifle. Is the Rossi you bought a single shot 44? |

No, my buddy's Rossi is a copy of the Winchester Model 92 with the tube magazine.

A lever action would be cool. I always though one in the semi auto Rugers( Deerfield carbines-I think) would be killer also. Had a great uncle that used his for black bear around here, never had a problem.

Our local gun/pawnshop has two Ruger .44Mag carbines - they want $500 for each. More than I want to pay. That would get me most of a decent AR-15! Still, a neat little gun.

I've used my uncle's old ruger semi-auto. Its a lot like the Deerfield except the action is that of a 10/22. I like them from the fact that they're powerfull and easy to drop large game. Definately a good gun for deer and other large game. The only problem is that the ammo costs so much. If your aim is really good I would suggest a .357 carbine for hunting purposes. But thats just my opinion.

Ruger always has resale value thats for sure. More than I would want to pay as well. Yeah actually I was looking for a 357 in one, but ended up with a 44Mag. I got an excellent deal on it. The semi Ruger you discribed is like the one my uncle used. I guess I'll keep looking for a 357 too. |

I do believe that the 44Mag and 357 are potiential rounds to be had in a rifle. Perhaps, no not to the velocities of a 30-06 nor the knock down power, yet have their nitch non the less. I love an underdog, and a lot of people pass by these 2 cartridges when chambered in a rifle, to go to something bigger, nothing wrong with that. I have done so myself, but am realizing the fun to be had. Nitch fillers-what a enjoyable thing. To each his own. Just seems to me as an absolutely great/fun truck gun. |

My current favorite .357 Magnum handload, right out of the Hodgdon manual, is 18 grains of Lil' Gun powder under a 158 grain soft-hollow point. It clocks 2000FPS in my buddy's EMF 18" barreled lever-carbine. Pressure is significantly lower than loads using other powders doing similar velocities. It clocks 1500FPS from my 4" barreled Ruger Security Six! This would be a decent deer load down here, as our deer don't run too large. Hunting distances rarely extend past one hundred yards.

Sounds like a good load. I'll have to try that once I get all set up. And those Grizzly ammo in 300gr Punch Bullets look pretty mean. Can you shoot the 44 specials in a 44Mag? |

Cool. Not that I will be buying a lot of them, but nice to know anyway. 2 for 1 is always good.
