| In the old days folks shot something to eat, they didn't usually do it for sport, and used what they had when the opportunity presented itself, humane kills,I imagine ,were not high on their list of priorities.

| Super Moderator ![]() | That would only be the case if it was a semi-auto and the action opened before the bullet was gone. That is the case with some barrel lengths of Ruger 10/22. I don't know what else might have that effect. I'd need to research this more, but might consider hunting whitetail with a 357 Rem Mag carbine. I doubt I would with a 357 Rem Mag pistol. And chances are I'd upgrade to a 44 anyway. 41 Mag would be interesting, I might consider that if I started reloading and could use the same bullets as 40 S&W.

| BRG, done it with a .357 4" revolver. Worked fine but it was only once and at about 25-30yds. Dropped about 15yds away after getting hit with 125gr jhp handload. But wouldnt go out after them intentionally with that thing again unless i get a lot more practice. Usually carry a .45colt ruger BH, 7.5 for that. Paul |

| Super Moderator ![]() | Folks around here use a 357 Revolver for hunting deer, I'd just go higher by personal preference, which is based on tons of opinion and almost no experience.

| In most cases, a carbine length barrel will always give a significant jump in velocity. I've done this, using a chrony, with several loads. 9mm Luger, .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, .22LR and .22WMR. Florida uses a formula to decide the power level of a caliber. .357Magnum is allowable, except witht he lighter bulleted loads. 9mm is not legal. Not to say it wouldn't work, but Mr. Ranger would not be pleased if he saw you do it.

| A while back one of the members here posted about killing a Whitetail with a 9mm. He showed pics and all. He didn't advise it, but it worked. I would like to see this post again. Not to say that's what I would use, I would rather use my 243, 30-06, M-39, 7.62x39,...etc |

| Auto pistol rounds don't gain as much velocity from a longer barrel as do revolver rounds. 9MM, 45acp etc gain some but a 357 out of a rifle barrel becomes a totally different beast. I'd have no qualms about using a 357 on whitetail with the right bullet and under 125 yards.
