After WW11 when the code was drawn up Gen "Red" Merritt Edson of the USMC was in charge of the panel. He held out for releasing our troops to say what ever they wanted. He felt the enemy would misstreat prisoners to get them to say what they wanted. When he was over ruled he went home and killed himself. What a waste . I knew him as he came from Montpelier Vermont.
