I would not worry much about buying a 9mm for the ladies and a 40 S&W for yourself. My daughter weighs in at about 105 pounds sopping wet and her concealed carry is a model 23 Glock 40 S&W and she shoots it without any problems with recoil in fact she has a 32 semi auto and a 38 special snubby but prefers the Glock. All I get out of her is that if (God Forbid) if I have to shoot someone I want to be sure they know that they have been shot. Just my $.02 Worth.

Check out the Ruger p95. I carried it as my first duty weapon. My wife now carries it and loves it as much as I did. User friendly, affordable, and accurate.

Jason,
I see you've gotten some diverse advice, so here's mine.

If the gun has the slightest possibility of being used as a self defense weapon, go with 9mm or better. Personally I can't recommend the Rugers or the Smiths, in semi's. Both are accurate and dependable guns, but the Rugers are usually large and sharp, and Smith has lost my vote, because they refuse to end the problem with the Govm't. I won't get into that, though...

My advice is to go to a good range and rent several guns in your chosen caliber. Shoot at least one box of ammo through each. Consider things such as size, comfort, recoil, etc. Get opinions from people who "do not" sell guns. Talk to your friends and folks at the range. Many people will let you shoot their pistols if you're friendly, and express an interest. Take your time and make an educated choice. My wife and I both shoot Glocks for just these reasons.
