What to do if shot at?

We know they're out there. Idiot hunters who seem to forget that rule about positively identifying your target. Question is, what is one to do if he finds himself shot at?

"Stop! Don't shoot!" seems to make perfect sense. But what if they can't year your voice? The thought that crossed my mind, that I'd like the experienced folks opinions on, is to shoot into the ground. Or would that do more harm than good?

"I thought you was a deer." just doesn't cut it for any sympathy from me. If anyone shoots at me or anyone I know, I'm making sure they don't hunt for a long time.

just become part of the dirt. if you can see another person while you are hunting, you absolutely have to consider them a threat to your life- there is a lot of idiots out there, and dont trust any of them.

someone is running at you with a sword,
is he attacking you or someone down the block?

self-defense is self-defense, regardless of the intent of the attacker
although if he mistook you for a deer and missed, I don't think you'd have to shoot him to defend yourself

I think a return shot intentionally missed would serve to inform the neanderthal hunting in your woods that you are not a deer. (Jesus why are these people in the woods)Where I live (NJ) this is an actual consideration (please God let me move to another state where people don't shoot at noises). I think the best response would be a shot well off target (like in a tree stump 50 yards to the left) if they were not reponding to voice. If they are not reponding to a voice in the woods, they are probably confusing it with a voice in thier heads. I run across people like this alot and it has more than once made me consider quitting hunting. I just keep going deeper. At some point I'll either move or give it up.

Of course, If you are being shot at no matter what you do (yelling, shooting, begging) all bets are off and tell the Creator I said hello.

anyone stupid enough to be shooting at something they haven't identified, well i just might be inclined to do more than just shoot in their general direction. who knows what they might do when they find that they just shot at a person.

I'm assuming that these people are stupid, not malicious. I'm talking about effective tactics for making it clear to the densest and deafest of people that you are a human being and not whatever animal they're shooting at.

an already stupid person could get even more stupid when they realise the amount of crap they're gonna be in when the law comes looking for them cause they just shot at a person. i dont know what you should do. if they are already shooting at sounds, jumping up and yelling boo wouldn't be a good idea. i guess hitting the dech and eatin' dirt might be the safest thing til the bullets stop flying. throw a grenade at em and tell em you though it was a terrorist in there. LOL

You guys seriously think someone who found out he was accidentally shooting at a person would then shoot to kill to cover up his mistake?

Its gonna be pretty hard to convice local law you were being shot at first and then returned fire and hit the guy. Besides, shooting back in his general direction is just as fallible as he shooting in yours since you wouldn't know if he is alone, has a child or with a party. You might hit an innocent bystander.

Carry an air horn. If he can't hear that, then he shouldn't be hunting.

My ex's uncle has one leg two inches shorter than the other because some "hunter" mistook him for a deer in some brush.

An old office acquaintance from a previous job went hunting with his brother and newphew. They were shot at. So my buddy was soooo proud of himself because they all dropped to the ground and opened fire. Needles to say I never took him up on his offer to go hunting the next season.

I wear my orange hat, orange vest just to make sure i don`t look like something to shoot at. I know you guys have been in the woods and seen the results.
People that wear orange really stand out. Point being there is no-excuse -now.
when i`m at my 'location" the orange comes but it`s kept close by just in case it`s needed.
As far as getting shot at i`m not sure what i`d do. I guess it`s easy to say," i`d blow his butt away". But then i may be sucking dirt and yelling. If on the other hand i was absolute in my thinking the "shooter" was after me then i guess you`d return fire. I sure it never comes to that.

Good call on the orange. I carry a security whistle as well.
I like being in a tree too. Usually I can see someone walking through the woods before they see me. I try to keep the tree stand off ridges where a shot could accidently come across. Mostly no problem with slugs and Bow though. Just have to use some common sense. Prevention of the situation is the best way to go.

Brg3,
It has happened to me in PA. Best advise eat the dirt behind a big tree! That's what I did but then I drew a bead on the idiot's chest and came within 1 1/2 LB of a 3 LB trigger of ruining my life and ending his. To this day I don't know how I stopped from killing that AH. I was an invited guest on private property, he was tresspassing. I MF'ed long enough and loud enough for most of the population of western PA to hear me. Then walked out got in the truck and went home. I never hunted in PA again, nor will I. I still have flashbacks of that fools Woolrich coat in my crosshairs, And It's been 20yrs now!

Yeah I reckon a big tree or a hole is the safest bet, keep down and wait till it's over, then bug out.

Around here most hunting related shootings are drivers (whom I loathe, sorry), squirrel hunters hitting a camoflauge bow hunter who's sitting in a tree, shooting down a road and pegging a car, or yahoo's who lead a deer right into his partners back. I hunt alone. Period. And if I know there's squirrel hunters while I'm bow hunting, I outta there.
I still think shots fired, even into the ground would get even the deafest ol' hunter's attention. As idiotic as they may be, they probably know deer don't carry guns (them squirrels, though. I don't trust 'em. I better be able to see all four paws. The beady little eyes......)

Tree would have to be darn big if he was using an '06 or similar power round. Then again maybe that would only be with FMJ.

Air horn sounds like a good idea. Only thing is some idiots might mistake it for an animal noise. That's why I thought of taking a shot in a safe direction - ie ground. Deer don't carry guns last I checked.
