My new G3

I picked this up at a gun store today. I don't know a thing about these guns other then their a blast to shoot. I had to use about half a bag of patches to get it halfway clean, this thing was DIRTY. First, is that a weaver base on top? Second, how in the world do I adjust the sites on it? If anyone can give me any more info on it, GREAT!!! What are some good sites to look at for furniture and stuff like that? Is there any good sites that show how to take it apart for cleaning? I've spent the past month learning about AR's seeing as how I was going to build one. But I enjoy this thing more then my brother-in-laws M4. Can someone set me on the right path?. Here's some pics I just took. Oh, exactly what do I have anyways?

Well, I really need to find out how to adjust the sights. I just put a target out at 50 yards to get used to the recoil. It was shooting about 3-4 inches low and about 4-6 inches to the left. The groups were actually pretty good.

As I recall the front sight is fixed and you just rotate the rear sight, there's a different notch for each predetermined distance.

Watch your finger on the cocking slide housing because, if it's anything like mine, there is a sharp, sharp edge where the cocking device slides and it'll slice the living crap out of your finger while you cock it if you don't keep just your finger tip on the cocking piece..

Rear sight is adjusted for elevation by rotating to the range in yards, V, 200, 300, & 400, windage is adjusted by slightly loosening screw in top of rear sight and turn screw in right side of rear sight to move sight. Retighten top screw.
Receiver was made by Federal Arms of Fridley Mn. for Century International Arms of Georgia VT. Assembled from a G3 parts kit, bolt was machined for semi auto only and has the last 3 or 4 digits of serial number hand engraved on it so it ended up in the right gun, trigger group is H & K 91, to allow only semi auto. Takedown, pull and release charging handle, remove two pushpins behind trigger group, put stock straight back and out of receiver, point muzzle up to drop bolt out of receiver, grasp pistol grip and swivel down and back to remove from receiver, selector will rotate anti-clockwise from left and push out allowing trigger group to come apart. Mine shoots better without a scope.

Buy an issue of Shotgun News, there're ads for companies that sell everything for it, keep in mind that the H & K Model 91 handguard does not fit and must be replaced with G3 model handguard, there are furniture sets (stock, handguard & pistol grip) in various colours available.

I posted a question on AR-15 about this stock in the H&K section. The first response "the only problem I can forsee is the embarassment of being seen with that." This is twice I've had some smartass comment from that site. Sometimes I really wish I could smack people through a monitor.

I had one of these rifles a few years back. It was dead reliable - never jamed. The only weird thing was with the accuracy. For the first couple shoots, it was VERY accurate, but as the barrel heated up a little, things went downhill fast. I was getting ~8 MOA with a scope by round 10 or so. Hopefully it was only a problem with the one I had. Very cool gun though! Enjoy. You may want to look at http://www.cdnninvestments.com/hk5.html for you stock.

I've done one MOA group with mine waiting a minute or so between shots. That's just to try it to its max potential.

Keep in mind that these are weapons that have been well used by some one before they were traded in on something new or sold off. Most of the rifle is used military, and can be anything from good to almost junk. The only problem I have with mine is the fact that I paid too much for it, it fuctions flawlessly, I could never get it to shoot well with the scope on it. I had to remove the rear sight to get the scope in the proper position for eye relief. The scope turned out to be junk, but the rifle shoots quite well with the sights. I wouldn't put another scope on it.

Well, I found a foward rail system for the G3, but it's around $300. I really wish I could find a PSG-1 style grip in OD green, or even black would be fine.

Oh, I also need to pick up some more ammo. I guess I should just buy some bulk Wolf .308. I put 40 rounds through it when I first got it, and what I do know, is the wolf ammo STINKS, very badly. And it's dirty too. But, for the money, I don't know where else I can get 1000 rounds of .308 to my door for under $200.

I'm not sure if the steel cased Wolf is good for the G3 system. Me, I picked up 200rd of German 7.62 NATO at the last gun show for $30. Best deal I ever found.

BRG3 reminds me, don't expect to reload your G3 brass, it comes out bent and fluted and is next to worthless. Buy the cheapest BRASS cased mil-surplus ball rounds in the 200 round battlepacks you can find.

Actually I'd say don't expect to find the brass at all. I've never seen a gun sling brass like the G3 does. I hit my brother-in-law at about 15-20 feet away, kind of fun though. So avoid the Wolf? Well, whats some other cheap ammo you can pick up cheap? I know you said German NATO but I really know nothing about ammo besides I need .308

German, Portugese, South African, Australian, and US. Stay away from old Chilean stuff labeled "Cartuchos de Guerra", I've heard of problems with Indian Ammo, I'm not sure about Malaysian and Argentinian varieties.
