Anyone ever fire an M249 Saw?

Okay, again ... so I'm gun happy, okay?

They have this M249 SAW at The Gun Store here in Las Vegas, NV.
Anyone ever fire one of these puppies? I'm really really REALLY considering renting this thing and running a few boxes of ammo through it. They have all kinds of guns to rent there, I saw a Steyr AUG, some cool autos, but the SAW just looks like so much fun ....

What do you guys think?

Great gun, much better than the 60, I've fired both. Rock & Roll forever.

Sweeeeeeet. I drool every time I get near the thing, heh. I use it alot when I play Battlefield 2. Seems like you can get say 40-60 rounds off before you have to let it cool. Is that standard, or is it just a way they control it in the game? You have to let it cool for like 5-10 seconds and then you can light it up again.

It's supposed to be able to do sustained fire, so they say, but when I fired it we took about 10 to 12 rounds and stopped, like you would do for suppression fire. Rattle, pause, rattle, pause, rattle, pause.

Hrm, I'll have to report in after I fire the sucker

Gonna get a color target of Osama Ben Dover and see how many I can nail center mass sustained. Gonna be alot of fun, I can tell that already. *drool*

I was in the infantry and shot them quite a bit. I Liked the functioning of the 20 better but the weight of the SAW was much better.

Bought the CATM guy a 12 pack once, got to run the 60 and SAW once through.

im not a fan of the belt fed family. not because they aint fun to shoot,just because i hated lugging the 60's so bad. could they make the dang things any heavier? heck being RTO was more fun. weighed close to the same but at least the radio was on your back. ive never fired a saw but i was at aberdeen when they were testing some and they do have a cool sound.

A bunch of guys from my shop went on a trip to Vegas about a year and a half ago and being gun nuts we had to shoot some full autos while we were there. A few of us shot the SAW and I have to say it is one of the best experiences you can have in life. We also shot an array of the shoulder fired weapons (i.e. Thompson, grease gun, Sten SMG) and that was just a !!!! of alot of fun!
I recently moved to Nevada from California and there was a machine gun shoot out in the desert that my wife and I went to. There was most every kind of machine gun you could imagine there and you could shoot a flame thrower!

That was an experience to remember. It may look like a lot of money to shoot a few rounds but trust me, it is worth every penny and then some.

I loved to fire the 60, but it was a witch to have to carry in a tactical situation.

fun to shoot them, but the 249 is just a fsat poodleshooter. the 240 is better. But like the 60, they all suck when you have to carry them for miles. Give me a FAL and a good boltaction and i still come in at less weight and can do more with fewer rounds. Having said that. It is something everyone should experience, so if you have the chance, jump on it. And ENJOY.

Ah the SAW had such fun with it. That brings back some memories. Never did get to use the 60 but I stole one once. Now before anybody gets any ideas let me explain. MCT Camp Pendleton Ca. during graduation war games. around 0130 hours our NCO takes my squad out for patrol. We creep into the enemies camp. (Well ok that may be an exaggeration.) We tripped and cussed our way through the into the "enemies camp". As we approached their perimeter a challenge was issued, "Halt who goes there!" I tightened my grip on my 16 waiting for the fight to begin. My NCO replies, "Who do you think!" very sternly I might add. (Now that I think about it I feel real sorry for the sentry because of what happened.) Being a new Marine as we all were, he did open fire or challenge us any further. Must've thought we belonged there. We continue on through their positions until we reach their 60 pit. This was payback! It sat atop a hill looking straight down the valley the we had approached through earlier that day. (As a matter of fact it was the very 60 that had killed in that valley earlier that day.) Joking I suggested to Sergeant Bressy that we take the weapon, as it was unguarded (well they were there but asleep) Surprisingly he agreed and told me to grab it. So I did get to carry one for a bit. I honestly don't remember it being very heavy, but then again I was so excited I probably wouldn't. We did return their weapon 2 hours later only after our platoon took up positions and lit them up, with their own 60. Ah what memories. Sorry I know it is a bit off topic but wanted to share.

Our M249's saw quite a bit of action in Iraq. They're reasonable light and I especially like the 200 rd ammo tub that attaches underneath. They aren't as forgiving as the old M60 about keeping them clean though. The M249 can accept M16 magazines in a pinch, but they don't feed very well. They M249 is pretty easy to control during sustained firing, but the barrel gets hot quick, fast, and in a hurry. I personally perfer "Ma Duece" .50 cal. or the MK-19. While in Iraq, Johnny Jihad would generally leave us alone if we had an escort of HUMMV's with .50's and MK-19's.

my brother was a SAW gunner in Afghanistan, and he did say they jammed a lot, his never did becuase he kept it clean, but others did. he also said the barrels do overheat very quickly
