Newfoundland for hunting?

Anyone ever hunt a Newfoundland? I have a 13 week old pup and I'm wondering how they would do in the field.

If memory serves me well, and it does from time to time, You should find your Newfie to be an extremely intelligent animal. Keep your commands sharp and clear, and be consistant.

Why would you hunt those? That seems kinda boring. They just sit there and look at you...

Well, I live in Newfoundland but I guess that has little to do with your question. I have never heard of anyone using a Newfoundland dog for hunting. They're intelligent, for sure, and great swimmers, but are most known for their rescue work, not for hunting. I'd be a little afraid someone might mistake the Newfoundland for a black bear; they're pretty huge.

Good point CV. I was just thinking, cause he likes the water so much, he might like fetching ducks or something. You'r right, though. He'd have to be draped in orange and a neon sign.

Here's a pic. He's 5 months now. Next to him is an adult tomcat. notice the towels to sop up the water he get's all over.

Wow, he's a big boy. I've got a 120lb Chocolate Lab right now, he's a huge guy. As far as your Newfoundland goes, has he ever hunted before? Is he gun shy? 5 months is stil young enough to train him up, I believe. I wish I had trained mine earlier in his life.

I gotta take him out to see if he's gun shy or not.
