| Senior Member | .17 Hmr Has anyone logged any experiences with CCI, Remington, and etc... .17 cal HMR. cartridges? So for, I have only fired the CCI. I bought a couple boxes of the Hornady cartridges in Indianapolis, but haven't had the opportunity to go to the range. The CCI cartridges are sure a treat to shoot. I was surprised at the accuracy. Now I mounted another scope on the rifle and am ready for a more serious time at the range. Indy |

| Senior Member ![]() | I'm thinking about one of those cheapie Savages...would really like that little single action pistol Ruger makes for that round also. How much is a box of ammo anyway?

| Senior Member | Some of the articles on firearms chambered for the .17 rate the Savage as one of the most accurate. I have looked at the Taurus revolver and it looks pretty good. I haven't shot one. A guy at the range had a Cooper rifle in .17. He spent over a $1000 for it. The wood was exceptional, but a little pricey for a rimfire. Ammo costs around $10 for 50 rds. Walmart has the CCI at $9.95 and the mail order catalogs have it from $9 to $10 plus shipping. One gunshop has Hornady at $11.95, but they are normally high. I hope the price falls as the demand or the new wears off. If you think about it, you can get 50 rds of 223 cheaper. The 17 is a great round. I think it will be around a while, but I am not sure if there are advantages over the 22 hornet or the cheaper 22 magnum. Indy |

| Moderator ![]() | Indy, I recently bought the Marlin 17V, and really like it. After breaking it in, I managed one group of five shots at 100 yards making a ragged .30cal sized hole. I'm hooked. That was shot with the Hornady ammo. I have a couple boxes of the CCI ammo, but haven't had the chance to try it yet.

| Senior Member | I hadn't seen a Marlin, but it sounds great. I haven't spent the time with my Ruger in order to determine accuracy. If fact, as you mention Big Dog, I am in the break in process. It was a difficult time running a brush through the bore cleaning after each shot. My plan was to go to the range over this Labor Day weekend. Naturally, it hadn't rained for a month, but the weekend is to be wet. Guys please keep me posted on the ammo. I my order some of the Remington. The Hornady most likely would be the most dependable. | Senior Member | I have the heavy barrelled "cheapie" Savage as Joe put it. It may not be the prettiest of of the .17's but I will gladly shoot against any other brand. I did have to do some trigger work because the factory trigger is horrible. I have put about 700 rounds through mine and have used the CCI, Remington and Hornady. The Hornady is the accuracy champ hands down. The others shoot darn good but dont group as small as the Hornady. Remington is the worst of the bunch....still not bad though. The ammo is $10.95 a box for all three brands but the Hornady always sells out first. Maybe other shooters prefer the Hornady too. I have noticed that the barrel does become pretty fouled with copper after shooting a box and needs to be cleaned regularly or accuraccy really drops. After about 150 rounds the group opens up to almost an inch! The .17 is an awesome round for its tiny size. I'm so use to shooting bullets in the 150-200 grain size that I was very sceptical. It has become my favorite gun to shoot at the range just to show other people the one ragged hole in the target! With a nice rifle and a scope the little .17 will hit where you aim. If you miss, you screwed up! |

Trader Rating: (0) | the original test gun for the 17 was the ruger and the hornady load thats what all the original 17 stats where formed on. i have the savage heavy bbl. shoots hornady very well and the cci as well if not better but it does not like the remington loads only getting a 1 1/2' groups with them at 50 yrds. not impressive at all. i get better groups at 100yrds with the other two. my dad has the ruger target and it loves the three of them so i would say its up to you and your bbl witch will be the best for you. joe stop waiting get one they are a blast !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

| Senior Member | In this mornings paper the Savage heavy barrel in on sale at Dunham's for $169.95. It looks as though it has a synthetic stock. The ad doesn't mention rings, but they may be included. Thanks, Snakebite and Colt 45, for the information on the ammo. It makes sense the Hornady would be the most accurate. I wonder what a Chronograph would tell us. If I can get an opportunity I will check out the CCI and Hornady. After your comments on the Remington it's apparent there isn't a need to buy any. The cartridge is great fun to shoot. Indy |

| Senior Member | Guys the website was impressive, thanks tscottw99. I am impressed with the rifles that were part of the article. The CZ I looked at was not as sharp as the one pictured. The only one that looked better was the Cooper at the range. I was looking for some tables giving data on the cartridge. I keep overlooking the Contender barrels chambered for the 17. They may be worth checking out. Indy |

| Moderator ![]() | My little Marlin 17V was around $170 at Wally World. Blued with the birch wood stock. The included rings weren't high enough for proper scope - they apparently are for a 3-9X32 scope. I went with higher rings to mount my Bushnell 4-12X40AO. Same scope as on my Marlin 25MN in .22WMR, and the magazines interchange too. With five magazines, a good scope and a lightened trigger, I'm ready for the "squirrel wars"! Head shots only though, if I want to eat 'em! Our local range is closed for more renovation, so it'll be a few more weeks til I can test the CCI ammo. I'm thinking the CCI will be better for hunting "the Prince of the Treetops", less explosive to the little critters.
