Red face Wind Age

Thought I would share this. When sighting in your .22 rifle outdoors take note of the crosswind no matter how slight. I used to wonder why I would do so poorly in shooting matches when I supposedly already had my rifle sighted in dead nuts. At 50 yds. I found that when I had sighted in my rifle there was about only a 2-3 mile /hr. crosswind downrange that was barely noticeable. When I shot later on a calm day my point of impact was about 10" off. Sometimes the wind would kick up and it would be right on target causing more confusion. I was using match ammo that I normally shoot so I know that wasn't the issue. Just some food for thought.

Nifty thing you can do is build your own shooting tunnel...
or find a structure that'll work in its place

Dig a nice long ditch, put concrete culvert in it, and at 25 & 50 & 100 yards, (size to your yard) leave openings...
on top of the openings, build windowless little concrete block huts with a door so you can enter & change targets...
run a wire for the lights, or use solar lights on each hut so the targets are lit...then cover everything with a few feet of dirt/earth for soundproofing...
For the main shooting hut, soundproof the walls on the inside and install an Ejector Fan (as powerful as you can find) so keep the smoke flowing out...
It will echo like a SOB, but as long as you wear proper hearing protection, its all good

NOTE: make sure you make the ditch/culverts Plumb & Level...otherwise you end up with shooting errors.

Big Shrek , I used to shoot at a private range built in town in a guys basement that had small doors that opened outward (5 0f them ) . The targets had their own lights and lights for sights just inside the door opening. Targets cranked in and out by hand. The tunnels were square I dont know what they were lined with . the range had a smoke eater range ventilation system. This was a private range in a home basement built with members of a small club . I sent several thousand down range there. If a guy has the want the time and some friends it can be done! It was a heck of a deal if I remember right yearly dues were $35 and a key was a $15 deposit.
