New Bolt Action. Savage Mk 2 vs. Marlin XT-22

I want to get a cheap new .22 bolt action for plinking, and just for beating around the woods. I Want a Savage Mark 2 F or a Marlin XT 22R. I know these guns are pretty similar, but I want to know what other people think about each one, so I can get a take on what owners think about them before I actually buy one.

Thanks.

Before anyone mentions it (because I know it will happen), I already have a CZ

I recently made a similar choice in a 22WMR rifle. I chose the Savage 93F although the Marlins traditionally are very accurate. My decision though was solely based on the widespread warranty issues along with numerous customer services problems that have been reported at Marlin since their acquisition by Remington and their subsequent move to New York. They have even ceased making some models so they can "get their $hit together" presumably. I decided they could perfect their new business model on the finances of someone else other than me.

Savage already went through the trials and tribulations of getting their $hit together several decades ago, and came out the other side as a quality company that turns out reliable and very accurate rifles. I'm a loyal Savage guy and never had one that wouldn't outshoot everything else out of the factory box. An American company that turned itself around on its own, without a government bailout, which is the only lasting way to do it. (See GM for the other side of the coin.)

And for a gun company to relocate TO New York makes about as much sense as making wood stoves in Panama!

I have a Savage Mark ll, a Savage 93 in 22WMR and 17HMR and I recently picked up a Marlin XT in 17hmr. Guess what? they are all great little Varmint guns, I have not had the Marlin long enough to say it's better then the Savage though. I'm installing a Boyds SS Evolution stock on the marlin so I'll let ya know how that turns out.

I agree, my Mavage Mod 93 G is spot on and I love shooting it. Only downside was I had to buy the scope bases when most .22's have a scope base built on already. That's my only complaint at Savage, other than that, great rifle.

Thanks guys, it looks like it'll be a Savage for me. Still going to go down to the shop and see which one I seem to like more.

got the savage mk2 and the automatic job for the wife. Get the Marlin, it's more accurate and comes tube fed.

I'm a big Marlin fanatic (Gee, ya think? LOL)

I'd be apt to send you out after an older one so you can REALLY see why us Marlin Nuts got that way

I do plan on an XT22MVSR (.22WMR heavy barrel)...but since the job loss, all new gun stuff is on hold...bleah...
the Twin Boys come first...more guns & accessories will come later

I've got the Savage MK II and love it. Haven't used a Marlin in years so can't comment on them.

Whelp. actually my Savage mk2 tube fed bolt action is pretty accurate. Nothing to complain about almost the same as the Marlin. My new marlin shoots so well without a scope I'm not going to put one on it. I may get another to scope it for the wifeypoo.

Haven't shot it yet...

I just bought a new xt-22 today.
Hope to not have QC issues, I've always liked Marlin. Funny, I was considering buying a Remington 597, but decided on a boltie.
The Savage is out of my modest price range anyway.

Read up on bolt-actions in the Marlins section here & on RFC for tons of helpful hints

Fatter Bullets work best...as in the jacketed ones tend to mic larger...

Avoid RGB's...(Remington's Golden Bullsquish)

Enjoy!!

I'll try the Federal 375 round bulk pack for $12.75.
I also have a 100-pack of CCI MiniMags, so I'll see how those do, too.

Thank you for your reply. I will remember your advice.
