I'm new to the 17hmr, and I dont know its potential, but I'd let to get a scope that matches the calibre.

a friend of mine has a 4x16 on his m-25mn and he does pretty good. on mine i just have a 3x9. ive always been of the train of thought that all things being equal the more power you can afford is better. although the m-24's we had in the army only had a 10x scope, they served very well!

I know about the wood Big Dog. I like it too and I only have two guns with the synthetic. While not as pretty, I am beginning to like them.
My .17 has an 8X32X50AO. Its really more than needed and if I did it again I wouldnt go over a 6X24.
30 yards isnt very far for the .17 but an adjustable objective scope will do it just fine. Its just a real pain to change settings at different ranges. You might consider a fixed power for shooting at close ranges.
I've also read the stories about 200 to 300 yard kills. I'm not so sure about that. 200 yards is within reason for a good shooter but not much more.
