| Member | LF: An accurate well-made NEW 22 Bolt rifle Don't want to spend too much, but from what I've seen so far my dealer showed me a Savage 22 bolt in a black stock and said I should put a 3-9 scope or 4-16 on it. What other rifles are accurate in this price point where I could throw a scope on. |

| Moderator ![]() | The Marlin .22 bolt action rifles are good value, and can be quite accurate shooters! You can get stainless actions with a nice laminated stock - add a decent scope, and you won't be disappointed. It's no Anschutz - but for the price, it can't be beat. You can diversify too. It's easy to have a .22LR, a .22 WMR and a .17HMR - all set-up and feeling near identical. Mine all wear the same Bushnell 4-12X40AO scope.

| Senior Member | Savage is accurate out of the box put the trigger pull needs work. For about the same price check out the CZ Lux or Ultra Lux. I love mine. The nice wood and machining make it look like it costs more than it does. I shot a gazillion rounds through my old Marlin and although VERY accurate and trouble free, I think the Savage or CZ just might out shoot it. That might just be me though. Check out the fixed 4X scopes from Nikon. Made for .22's and very nice. Not a ton of money either. |

| Senior Member | dime size groups at 100 yards? if thats what ya want , ya better just save up for a 10/22 and save alot for the ruger custom shop too. i have a marlin model 25MN 22mag and i havent shot it with the scope i bought for it yet but with iron sights and one very fuzzy right eyeball it kept groups at about 2 inches at 100 yards. i imagine with the scope i can probably get the groups down to 1 inch consistantly.i dont really hold out for better than 1 moa and im really thankfull that i got 2 moa right outa the box! that amazed me cause most every 22 i had before was not accurate at all. the only gun i have that can shoot dime size groups at 100 yards is a 1916 C.G. swedish mauser.

| Senior Member | I didnt want to say anything about dime size groups at 100 yards with a .22. Crazyhair just might be a darn fine shooter but thats a mighty small group with a .22 at that range. For dime size groups using a rimfire, get the .17HMR. My Savage heavy barrel in .17 caliber will put em through the same hole at 100 yards. None of my .22's come close. |

| Member | Yeah I'm looking at that Savage 17HMR only thing is, do I wait for the new 17mach 2? from what I've read the 17HMR is the way to go, its more accurate and powerful.. I just hope the ammo price drops. do the 17s get dirtier than a 22? I heard you need to clean them every 50 shots? if so thats not good, but I heard the groupings get huge if you dont keep em clean |

| Senior Member | Crazyhair, the Savage .17HMR is great. Light years ahead of a .22 in accuracy and power with virtually no recoil and only a slightly louder report. The ammo prices have dropped some here since there are more manufacturers making them. They will never be as low as .22's but will probably come down a little more in the near future. Yes, they do need to be cleaned more often. I find my accuracy drops after about 50 rounds. But what the heck...ya need to let the gun cool and take a break from shooting just long enough to run a few patches through it! The .17 Mach 2 is still too new and havent seen one yet. I'm sure ammo will cost about as much as the HMR but for the money I would rather spend it on a proven round. You wont be disappointed in the HMR! Dime size groups at 100 is the rule...not the exception. |

| Member | Nice I read on RFC that the accuracy of a 17hmr stays pretty good for around 500 rounds then you gotta clean it, so it doesn't really sound too bad. yeah the savage was the first gun I looked at and its nice, I atuomatically assumed I'd get the heavy barrel thou, the FV, assuming it helps a little for accuracy then I'll get it. |

| Member | For a scope I don't know, I heard people are making ground squril kills anywhere from 200 to 300 yards! they aim a foot above the squirrl and make the kill, thats insane? What kind of scope would work from 25 yards up to around 150, and have enough zoom to hit dimes at 100 yards, and maybe try some quaters at 150 yards? 4-16x be enough, or more of a 6-24x? and how close is a 6times good for, can you use the 6-24 times in at 30 yards? |

| Moderator ![]() | I'm still partial to the Marlins. Model 25MN (.22WMR) : capable of 5/8" groups at 100 yards. Model 17V (.17HMR) : capable of .3" groups at 100 yards. Both of mine wear the Bushnell 4-12X40AO scope. 'Nuff said. The Marlin .22LR guns are good too, but I don't have a newer one yet. The Savage is okay, maybe as accurate as the Marlin - but that plastic stock is not to my liking. Too cheesy and flimsy. Real rifles wear wood!

| Senior Member | i dont know what ya read that in but even a 300 remington ultra mag drops more than 12 inches at 300 yards. for long distance small game id go with a 6mm IMP. and hand loads.
