Remington has just released a 3rd design magazine in the last 2 months or so. It is internally different in that it moves the rounds closer to a single stack design it also uses the same fowler with a different spring. (.029 vs .028 wire used on the 1st and 2nd design.) The 3rd design magazine just says just says "Model 597" on the base pad. The second design metal says "22LR Model 597" on the base pad. The 3rd design magazines seemed to have solve most of the issues I had with my 597. Finally!!!

CCI Mini mags seem to work real nice with the new magazine. Sub sonic ammo seems to make many stock semi auto 22LR choke much more often in my experience with 10/22 and 597.

My stock 597 sporter barrel groups slightly better than 2 stock sporter barrel 10/22 I have. But my 10/22T HB is the best grouping semi auto 22LR I own. Hope this helps.

Remington 597 What do you think...

I'll tell you what, the 597 is a great rifle. I bought a used one a month ago from a shop in a neighboring state for $86.50 + tax. The rifle is in excellent shape, the dealer told me he had it on auction and he had many inquiries as to the type of magazine and if the extractor had been replaced with the more current one. As he did not know if the extractor was replaced and the magazine that came with it was the polymer one. I took the gun and cleaned it then took it to the range, it jammed on a full mag. I came home and went to the Remington site and asked if they could help me out. If folks are having problems with Remington products go to this page, you'll have to register prior to getting help though. http://remington.custhelp.com/cgi-bi...acct_login.php I am presently waiting for Remington to repair/replace the magazines I sent them, I have since purchased 2 magazines from Cabela's and the rifle functions perfectly. These are an excellent rifle with the right magazines and some need to have the extractor replaced with the newer one which has a few changes. I'm happy with it especially for the price.

Renington 597

I have two - one in .22 mag and the other in .17 HMR. They both shoot very well, in terms of accuracy. Everything said concerning the cartridge mags, however, is true. They are crap. All I could do was keep trying different ones until I found the one that worked best, and load no more than 6 rounds into it. It works pretty reliably.

Word of caution: if a round does not chamber completely (the bolt closed all the way), do NOT fire the gun! Unlike some guns that will not fire with the bolt not completely closed, my .17 HMR 597 will... upon firing, it spit the deformed cartridge case and some powder back into my face... along with some parts from the action... no fun at all! My gun dealer's gunsmith put it back together, and now it shoots fine. The cause: a bit of a cleaning patch in the chamber kept the cartridge from completely chambering. Soooo... keep this gun (any gun for that matter) really clean!

I wouldn't get one- Two of my buddies had them and they were jammers left and right. But if what they say about the new magazines is true then good luck

I bought one of these a year ago. At first, it was failing to feed about every 3rd round. I called Remington and they sent me 2 new magazines. The gun has loaded every round since then, which is about 2000 rounds. The trigger is on the heavy side, although it does break nicely...just a bit heavy. The accuracy is incredible for a .22 rifle. I've gone up against 10/22's and beat them with ease at the 100 yard shots.

I would buy another, knowing that I might have to call Remington for a new magazine. Aside from that small issue, the gun is worth twice what they sell for in my opinion.

First and second Generation mags are crap. Mine came with second Gen. and I fought it for a while until I contacted Remington about it.. I sent my mags in, and got two 3rd Generation mags for free.

Not one single problem since.

One note.. When sending in the mags, just mention that the gun's less than 2 years old, since that's how long the warranty is good for.

Or..

My local Walmart had mags on sale for $6 each.. I bought them all.

597's are a great gun once the little mag issue's solved.

I love my 597. It started out as a jam-o-matic, but now functions flawlessly. Check out the "stickys" in the Remington section on rimfirecentral.com regarding the 597. I adjusted the guide rails as suggested there and modified my 2nd generation magazine also as suggested and fixed all the jamming problems. Added a $35 VQ hammer which is easily installed in 15 minutes and dropped the trigger pull under 4lbs.
Bottom line - two free and easy adjustments + a $35 part turned a gun that I was disappointed in into a fun and accurate plinker.

i have a 597 LS HB(laminated stock heavy barrel ) in 17hmr. i didn't have any problems untill i took it apart to clean it. the bolt rides on 2 steel guide rods which each have 2 springs on them one inside the other. i could not get the springs back on the rods and put the assembly back in the reciever. i ended up taking it to a gunsmith to put it back together. i never had a problem like this with any firearm i own. needless to say i go thru a lot of gun scrubber spray cleaner. other than that it's accurate and feeds ok. the non mag guns have only 1 spring on the guide rods so they probably go together easily.

I've never taken the bolt off of the guide rods, because once you drop the trigger block out, you can literally clean the entire receiver cavity. Sorry to hear that you had an issue reassembling the gun

They've gone up over the last couple years..
I bought one at Walmart for $107 on sale, and now I'm seeing them go for almost $200.

Just couldn't be happier with my 597 [synthetic camo stock version] - great shooter from brand new, and zero problems of any kind. I did do a quick take down cleaning/adjustment per all "new to me" firearms whether brand new or milsurps, channel sanded the barrel trough to achieve barrel "float" and went shooting....and shooting....etc. Just installed a scope to help out my tired old eyes and am having great fun shooting against my sons well setup scoped 10/22. Right now he has a ".22 experience" edge - but just give ol' dad some range time THEN we'll see whats what!

Man I had no idea about the 597. I thought about buying one today. I found one at this gun show for 140 but I bet he would have taken about 120 for it. I guess I should have jumped on it. What kinda groups should I get out of it at say 50 yards?

I'm really enjoying my 597 - shoots a wide variety of ammo w/o hiccup, and is very accurate - easily matches "massaged" 10/22's in our shooting group. I did a typical "new gun" strip cleaning/setup prior to shooting - found it to be solid well made rifle, I'd definitely buy another - and after some shooting experience I have to say I prefer it to a similar setup 10/22.
FWIW - after reading all the hoo-rah about mags, I stripped mine prior to use and made certain interiors & all contact surfaces were smooth etc. They've loaded and fired all 10 rnds reliably since new. I'm going to get a couple of the new "hi-cap" mags as I do get tired of having to constantly load those 10 rnd ones!
