| Member | Sounds like a good buy but I've never shot one and dont know anyone who has one. I've had my 10/22 for 18 years now and have put thousands of rounds through it. I mounted a Simmons 3x9 scope on it and its deadly in the squirrel woods. Pretty much unfair to the critters! The 10/22s downfall is definately the trigger. I'd like to see a head to head match between the 597 and the 10/22. Just for fun, and cheap fun! |

| Senior Member | I bought one new a week ago. Took it out to the range the day I got it, put a little lube on the guide rails, and loaded her up. Then I noticed the rear sight windage screw was almost ready to fall out and the sight was flopping around. Kinda amazed that a gun would leave the factory like that, I tighened it down and started to fire. I kept getting failure to fires. It would eject the spent case, feed the next round, but seemed like it wasn't cocking. The ejected, unfired round would have a tiy dent rather than the usual healthy dent a fired case would have. After cycling the action, it would fire like normal. This happened an average of 1 shot in 10 for the 200-250 rounds I ran through. I tried CCI greentag, Federal Champion, and Remington Target, and CCI hyper velocity. All did the same thing. I noticed that it was usually happening on the second shot out of the magazine. Bummed out, I went home and cleaned and lubed it. I hoped it was just a lubrication issue or it just needed to break itself in. I also bought another magazine to see if a different magazine cured the problem. This morning I mounted a scope and headed back out to the range and ran through another 150 rounds. The problem was not only still there, it was worse. It jammed on the second round out of the magazine about 90% of the time. Two new problems arose, too. It stopped holding the bolt open on the last shot more often than not. Not a biggie, but frustating on a brand new rifle. The second problem was much scarier. After about 100 rounds today I pulled the trigger and popop. It fired two rounds with one pull of the trigger. I thought I had imagined it. In the next 4 or 5 magazines it did it again twice. I'm calling Remington this week. Hopefully they'll sort it out. This gun has been more problematic than the 10 year old Mossberg plinkster I got for $25 at a pawn shop. |

| Registered User | myarmor, You can't beat this rifle. If I had the use for two of them, I would have bought two, but I can only shoot one at a time. I have put it through its paces in just over a couple of weeks. I have shot 1200 rounds and not a single jam, hiccup, spit, sputter and any other word you can throw at it. Remington finally corrected the magazine issue with the version 3 mag., it has a plastic bottom with 597 and the 10 imprinted on the side of the metal portion has a circle around it. This indicates the newest version of the mags. Like DDG stated the trigger is probably the only con I could find with it, but for around $150 you can't beat this plincker. Happy Plinking! gadawg31 |

| Senior Member | I purchased it new, and have cleaned it twice. I'm pretty anal about cleaning thanks to Uncle Sam's good training. I purchased it new with an additional magazine. Both are 3rd gen mags. Maybe I just got a lemon. I'm going to call Remington as soon as things calm down at work. Right now, I'm at work 12 hours a day, and I can't call while there, so it will have to wait. One thing I will say, when it works it's more accurate than I would have expected. With a 9x scope, I was popping clay pigeons set up at 100 yards with ease. |

| One Buwwit Weft ![]() | You can take care of all the questions and answers via email at Support Login I had 2nd gen clips and I took care of everything by email. I mailed the bad ones in and got 3rd gen clips back, and haven't had a problem with the gun since.. That's been almost 2 years ago.

| Senior Member | I have 3 of them. .22 lr, .22 mag and .17 hmr I love them and they are very accurate smooth shotting guns. They feel good for a remfire and seem to be solidly constructed. The plastic mags are the only weak point I see but with the metal mags problem solved. |

The second generation mags sucked, but Remington will replace them with ones that work. Or go aftermarket.

| Registered User | Here is a web site with a few accessories for the 597 : Rimfire Sports & Custom: Remington 597 Accessories I bought a 30 round clip from gander mountain and it feeds 28 rounds perfect if I load 30 the first round out jams 28 and no problems. Also all the old mags can be made to work just take the bottom off of the mags and sand the guide rails until it fits loose and slides up and down freely. When I first got my 597 I thought it was junk also but after very very little trouble shooting of the rifle I found and fixed the problems. In my opion these rifles are all fine. People that can't tune a rifle will have problems with any rifle not just a 597. My fathers old marlin used to jam alot it wouldn't feed 2 rounds. We tore the rifle down cleaned and polished all the moving parts it now feeds all 14 rounds without a hitch. Last edited by ponetoshooter; 04-01-2008 at 10:06 PM. |

| Registered User | HELP!!!! I do target shooting at 50yrds exclusivley with .22s. I am finally getting my own first gun instead of borrowing friends (mom finally broke) and I'm intrested in the Remington 597 but have heard conflicting reviews basically centered around the mags. Could anyone give their two cents on this gun as a first time gun or possible suggestions. Tanx |
