Thanks, would you happen to know a good price for the Mark II? I don't want to get ripped off.

I have three 597s: .22LR and .22WMR, both bull barreled with Silhouette stocks; .17HMR with standard barrel and synthetic stock. All are "right on" accurate and fun to shoot. Only feed and extract issues I've had have been with the .17. I saw a recommendation in another forum to load the magnum mags to 5-6 rounds only; did that last week and put hundreds of rounds through both magnums with no issues of any kind. The .22LR doesn't like Remington ammo so I shoot CCI, Winchester-Western and Federal in it. Last month I found hi-cap (30 rd) mags for the LR on the net. Tried them out last Sunday; one was flawless, the other jammed. Personally, I love my 597s and just haven't had the issues others cite. Be advised, though, takedown and reassembly (especially reassembly) is a little quirky because of the rod and spring system (and the magnums have twice the springs). Oaths and facial expressions learned while maintaining my Ruger MkII 10/45 have been most helpful.

Okay i have had my remington 597 for 3 years now. It is the best rifle i have ever shot. The only problem i have noticed is the clip sometimes stick. I us it to go hunting quite often i have a scope on it and it holds the pattern about the size of a golf ball at 75 yards. I am very pleased with it and wouldnt trade that rifle for anything. I have a buddy who bought one a few weeks ago and has already put around 500 rounds through it and so far seemed to be a good gun! He did have an issue at first with his plastic mags jamming but they just needed to be broken in,After about 200 rounds they worked fine. My biggest complaint is when I shot it it fealt light and to much like plastic. BUt then again his gun works awsome its pretty accurate. I do know though the first 100 rounds it was all over the place..i meen all over the place but it seemed like after around 100 roudns it the pattern tightened up alot. I Just think it needed to be "broken in" cause ever since then it kept a much tighter pattern.

I got this 597 .22LR with scope a couple weeks ago from Dick's, run 200 rounds through it. The pattern is still too loose. I am a good shooter. The pattern shouldn't be like that. I also got two misfires using Remington 22 Thunderbolt today. Never happened before. Is that because it's too cold (~30 degree) or something wrong with this rifle?

Well i have had my 597 for about 2 months and i already had to replace the extractor twice. So im ready to get rid of it. So if anybody wants to buy it let me know. It comes with the factory clip plus 2 30rd clips and a scope. it also comes with a gun case and im asking $200.00 or best offer.

Sorry on late response on this too, but just found this thread also you probably saw another response of mine on 597's to a guy about a first rifle. FYI, bought a new 597 TVP in SS 4 months ago, with 2 metal mags and 1 30 round Rem mag. Gun has been awesome, no jams, accurate, good feel--but this model with thumbhole stock is pricey--one step below the Rem. custom shop 597. Still am VERY happy. Also thought trigger on this one is great too, very little creep, fairly light pull, so Rem might have improved pull on recent triggers too. Bud did see rimfire parts and might buy Voquartson hammer just for something to play with |

I have one but I don't love it. It jambs quite often and is really unreliable. I shot thousands of shells through it as a younger kid and that may be why but for $100 bucks I would get it if I were you. Personaly, I like my Marlin 925

I own one in .17 HMR with the synthetic stock and it is easily the most frustrating weapon I have ever owned. THE GOOD It is very accurate. It tracks across a target beautifully. I am absolutely in love with the trigger. THE HORRID It consistently misfeeds EACH AND EVERY ROUND!!! Pull the trigger, clear the jamb. Complete dissassembly is a royal pain due to the 4 springs, 2 guide rods, and 2 set screws. DETAILS Each and every round the weapon loads is a jamb. The spent casing from the previous round NEVER EVER clears the weapon before the bolt moves forward. The spent round is caught and holds the bolt open causing a missfeed. Possibly an issue with the springs? Assembly of the weapon is a serious PITA. Threading the springs onto the guide rods is rough. There are 2 springs per rod and they do not wish to be compressed to fit over the rods and into the back end of the bolt. I have found that getting a TINY needlenose pliers to hold the spring in compression while I grab more spring is the only method that works without binding and damaging the forward end of the spring. SUGGESTION FOR FIXING THE ASSEMBLY ISSUE The aft end of the receiver houses 2 set screws. These are removed to pull the guide rods. Once the rods are out you can yank the springs and bolt. The 2 set screws in question are just the right diameter to allow the rods to come out the holes in the receiver. If the holes in the rear of the receiver were larger diameter, you could put the rods in place, then thread the springs over them without worrying about binding the forward ends of the springs. Larger holes would require larger diameter set screws, prefferably with indents on their forward face to keep the rods from wandering. That is all Remington needs to do in order to make this weapon servicableable....drill larger holes, use larger diameter set screws. I am still fighting with my 597. I bought a Marlin 917VT so I would have something dependable while I fought the 597. I have not decided if I am going to send the rifle back to Remington for repairs...or to be melted down so they could start over. The other alternative is to send the rifle and the deed to my house to Volquartsen. |

I have had one for 2 months now. 2000+ rnds down range. It's the "LS HB" variety. More accurate than I am. My only issue was cheap winchester ammo(lead hp's). I shoot federal or rem goldens through it. Good weight balance and feel. It does not feel like a cheap 22. I got mine new in Rhode Island for $309. Love it!!

UPDATE I took the rifle to the range last night. As always, it misfed each round. Not only that, it spit out the extractor, extractor spring, and extractor retaining pin. I have no idea where the parts went, I just noticed they were gone when I got home. I was going to send it back to Remington but I changed my mind. Instead I will get the Volquartsen extractor and hammer. The rest of the replacement parts will be Remington but I am going to try out my idea of drilling larger holes for the guide rods and springs. Larger set screws should be easy to find. I will post up as I have news or progress. |

Akazilla: The Volq Hammer does wonders for the trigger. I'm sorry to hear that your gun puked its parts all over the ground...I've never heard of a M597 falling a part like that. I guess I'm lucky that mine worked perfectly out of the box. Once you get it working 100%, it will be your favorite rifle...I can guarantee that. |
