Remington 597-What do you think...

My experience was just like Akazilla's. With the metal 10-rd mag that came with it, only 10-20% of the rounds misfeed. With the plastic 30-rd mags I bought, one of them simply broke after only a few uses (spring-loader doesn't push up to the top) and the other two misfeed every single time. Huge waste of $200. I'm never buying Remington again.

I've owned my 597 for around 8 months. lemm tell ya right now, this is the most accurate semi-auto .22 ive ever owned, even better than my 10/22.

the mags are extremely stiff to load at first, but they will loosen up after a few hundred rounds.

when the gun gets to you, the first thing you need to do is soak a patch with REM oil and slide it through the barrel, then run a copper bruch through about 15 times. this'll get rid of the imperfections in the barrel. completely disassemble and clean and oil it, then it'll be fine! this rifle is extremely accurate (i can get .3" groups at 50 yards on a good day) it functions great in cold or hot, wet or dry. the mags, although stiff to load at first, will break in and i love my REM 30 rounders. the 10 rounder it came with is also very reliable.

i think those of you that are having issues with the magazines need to put a couple crops of REM oil onto the mag wall and the spring. then it should work perfectly.

the trigger is heavy, i won't disagree with that (my rifle has around 8 lb. pull) but it creeps, so you can squeeze the trigger slowly and still get good accuracy.

it's a very tough rifle as well, although it won't work with CB short ammo(CCI), it won't function with low velocity ammo, although it WILL function with AGUILA SNIPER SUBSONIC ammunition (it's also VERY accurate with this ammo).

The plastic mags, of course, are less sturdy than metal, but if you treat em' nicely and keep em' clean they'll work just fine! my 30 rounder has never misfed. (put a drop or 2 of REM oil inside it to help the carrier slide more easily)

I did my modification using the larger set screws at the aft end of the receiver as mentioned previously. (all praise be to the McMaster Carr catalog) The larger set screws did require a bit of sanding on the nylon stock but that is pretty minor stuff and once the action is in place, you never see it. (under a minute with the dremel to create 2 very small indents for the set screws to rest in. Put mold release on the aft of the receiver and the set screws. Add JB WELD to the indents, put action in place and let JB WELD cure. Come in the next day, clean it up, now your stock is molded to match the receiver again)
The Volquartzen bits went in, and the retaining rod for the extractor got a drop of super glue.
500 rounds down the road and not a single misfeed or missed extraction.
I may have to declare this trouble ticket CLOSED.
BTW, did anyone else notice that Remington issued a recall for the 597 in .17 HMR? It is almost as if they realised there was a problem and tried to get the rifles back before they ran into product liability problems.
Remington is offering a coupon if you send your weapon back. I have not made up my mind if I wish to keep the 597 or get that terribly cute bolt action .17. (Model 5?)

Not a problem, bought my son the 597 Friday afternoon, took him to the range Saturday morning with about 200 rounds....3 different types....never cleaned the gun just sprayed it down with some liquid wrench....shot like a champ...the only jam was the very first time he shot it and that was the only jam of the day.

Straight out out of the box (well off the shelf anyway i bought it without a box but you know what I mean), it is shooting high and there maybe a problem with the sights, but for a first rifle and costing less than $140 it is a great little gun so far....

Also before we went we stopped in and bought another magazine for it and both the original and aftermarket worked without a flaw....I even put the max rounds in each..held 10 just fine....no jams what so ever....

Showed my son how to clean it tonight (he is 8) he wants to go back tomorrow so we are.....gonna grab the cheap stuff again and i'll let everyone know how it goes....

Does anyone have a good breakdown diagram? Would like to do a few things to it down the road and just dig a little deeper into it right now..to clean it up a little more....

Only guy I have ever heard of that 'likes' creep and a heavy trigger! They are the scourge of accuracy! If it shoots as good as you say... Think what it could do with those problems (and they are problems) fixed!

Creeps with accuracy - that's an oxymoron (you know... Jumbo shrimp).

You need to get a Marlin to find out what can really be done with precision in .22lr

10/22 - average 3" groups
597 - average 2" groups
Marlin 795 - average 1" groups

I have a 597 I got from Cabela's this past spring I think it was. Initially it would jam about every 5th or 6th round, however after I took it apart to investigate the problem, I found that the gun probably hadn't been cleaned in quite awhile. the small springs that go on the two little guide rods were covered in what looked like the same corrosion that you see on car battery terminals. After a thorough cleaning it runs MUCH better now. I bought a second metal magazine, which was a bit stiff at first but a couple hundered rounds seems to have cured that, now the only issue that I have with it is the heavy trigger. That having been said, I think this is a good little rimfire. I "gave" it to my two stepsons 10 & 12 yrs old , and they like to take it out plinking or going after squirrels though the 12 yr old does much prefer my SKS (who'da thunk it?). But back to the 597, now I just clean it after about every 800 rounds or so and it does pretty well.

O.K. Day 2 (25 October) for this rifle was a little different, yes it jammed but it was more operator error than anything....I bought an after market magizane from Gander Mountain and my son was not used to it (he is only 8).

We did get some jams from shooting so many rounds that it got dirty and that would cause jams...but shoot some cleaner in there and it would work fine for another 75 to 100 rounds give or take....

In 2 days we shot more than 500 rounds through the little rifle, and 99% were operator error jams, my son just not understanding that if you pull the bolt back you should not pull it back again...things like that...he knows better now and we are going again tomorrow 1 Nov....I'll give another review of how the day went....

Overall great little rifle.....

3rd day of shooting.....forgot the oil....

BUT....after 300 - 400 rounds....the only misfires were from my son again not fully seating the magazine....and we had 1 stove pipe....that's it....would fire just as fast as you could pull the trigger....without any oil for all those rounds...

However, I have come to the conclusion that the magazines are crap...even the after market magazine I bought.....

It is extremely accurate...at 25 yards with a few adjustments of the iron sites....shooting free hand....and when rested, I was touching bullet holes at the same distance...

All and all...for the money....well worth it!!!

I have several .22LR semiautos, this one shoots great and functions perfectly. The trigger pull has been lightened and the composite stock replaced with a nice laminate.
