My letters have already been sent and I received a great reply from my Congressman!

Every member of this forum should be writing their representative on this bill: House Bill titled 'HR 45, Blair Holt Licensing and Record Act of 2009'

Check it out, and for your for your representative - look here:

Office of the Clerk

Great place to surf and check-up on these sleazeballs also.

I think I will start a new thread on this... I don't recall seeing one and it is important!

I've had 22 mag guns on and off. I bought a Marlin 925M at Walmart for $197 about 2 wks ago. The 7 round mag was defective, so a call to Marlin got me a relacement in about 4 days. The 4 round mag works well.
I've got ammo with bullet weights of 30 grains up. I'm getting ready to try some Fed 50 gr HP's.

My Marlin 883SS is one of my favorite rifles. I think it's because I only paid $125 for it and it is an absolute tack driver. I really like the 13 round tube magazine and I can easily shoot spent shotgun shells at 100 yards (with a cheap 3-9x40 scope)

My other small game Bolt rifles are a Savage BTVS in 17 HMR, a Savage Mark II Classic (.22LR), and a Savage 12 in .22-250.
I like them all!
I haven't started hunting yet, but hope to start soon, with sage rats and possibly coyote.
I have a couple ARs too (.223 and 5.7 x 28) but will probably not hunt with them.

WMR Rifles

I have a Marlin 25MN bought new in 1999. I've taken many squirrels and
coons with. I got it for the fact I wanted a little more power and some-
thing different than standard 22lr. Standard 22's called hyper-velocity
has really brought a new dimension to regular 22's. The 22 magnum is
just a whole different cartridge with a louder bark and take down power.

The 17 caliber has become very popular. It may have a flatter tragectory
and farther range, but the end result is IMO - OVERKILL!!!! The sight of
animals hit by this cartridge and exploding is too gross. The 22 magnum
is more gentler but effective cartridge within its range. The 22 magnum
with the use of various 40 gr hp's appear to be the most humane round
on squirrels. Yes, a little, but just a little guts may show, but one round
kills them so quickly and doesnt damage the meat. Hyper velocity stand-
ard 22's are good and are quite good but the feeling of having a magnum
that has a property of overkill without ruining the meat is my kind of
cartridge.

I used a standard Weaver 4X scope that worked well until a drunken
friend of mine bore sighting it damaged it beyond use. I now use a
Bushnell Trophy Scope with variable feature and is a 3-9 x40mm. Makes
my 22 mag look like a big game rifle. I have it sighted for 50 yards and
it's very very very accurate!!!!!!

I don't guess anyone checks out the original date on this thread,It is almost 5 years old,and I don't believe NRAJOE ever bought a 22WMR. I think he stated that somewhere in this thread.

I went and checked the ammo...not badly priced (though not as cheap as .22lr)

Ammo looked like stretched out .22lr rounds but they also had little rounds that looked like little .223's!

Never had or have shot a .22 mag.

So why should I get it .22 Mag fans?
i don't know if you can call goin to a .17 a jump down considering they go a lot faster (.17 velocity is 1600fps at 100 yards where a .22lr is 1600 at the muzzle) and reaches much farther than a .22lr. never once has a ghog walked away from my .17hmr. i've shot ghogs at anywhere from 45 to 150 yards perfect placement with a .22lr and .22mag and only one time had an instant kill with a mag at 60 yards . my .17 has dropped ghogs on the spot anywhere from 40 to 300 yards but i believe every cal has its uses as well as its ups and downs but if you want extended range look into a .17hmr

I am looking for a good 22 wmr rifle as well. but may go up to the centrefire .222 magnum as above.
after reading your post, i went over to amazon and ordered this book...... just thought you might like to know......

I had the same dilemma....22 mag vs .22 Hornet.
I went with the one I could reload.
I couldn't justify paying the price for the .22 mag for cases I'd be throwing away. .22 mag runs about $11-12 a box around here. >22 Hornet is quite spendy but at least I can reload it.
I recommend a caliber you can reload...MHO and 2-cents

Though this Thread is old, I'm going to add my 2 cents. I bought a Marlin 22 mag with wood stock back when I was around 22 to 23 years old.
It hardly ever saw any use by me, but my son always prefered it when he went on day hikes.
I traded it for a Marlin 983 T with synthectic stocks 2 years ago.
There fun to shoot but your limited to what you can hunt with them in my state and maybe some others.
At this point in my life I now think haveing a 22 magnum rifle is pointless.
Especialy if you own other guns to hunt rabbits, squirrels or varmints.

I have 4 guns in my small collection that I would trade "up" for something else and one of them is my 22 mag rifle simply because I don't need it or use it.

You may be different than me and find a use for one which is fine, but I personaly don't see a need to own one.

One quick observation, as it relates to my situation:

22 Hornet and 22 WMR are both in between 22LR and 223. Of course they're not the same, but at least they fit a similar niche.

22 Hornet, being centerfire, is allowed in some states for hunting larger animals where rimfire is not. I wouldn't use it on deer, but at least the flexibility is there. So if your deer are small and you want to use the same gun for them and small game, 22 Hornet is an option.

In PA, small game can only be hunted with shotgun and rimfire only, with the exception of groundhogs. So if you are like me and choose a 30 cal for deer, you'll want a separate small game rifle. You could easily get a gun for every critter, but there's something to be said for wider usage of fewer guns. So if I wanted one gun for groundhogs, squirrels, and rabbits, 22 WMR would be a good choice.

Good to see you again BRG3,when did they outlaw centerfires in Pa?That is where the original 1000yd club started. They tried to take deer at 1000yds.I've hunted with centerfires in those mountains. That's wierd and disgusting. ,,,sam.

Red face great gun

my dad and my grandpa both own marlin 22 mags....these are great guns and more accurate than most 22LR ...they also have a slightly longer range than the 22LR(although still a short to medium range rifle)..............the 223 has a longer range but is also louder...........i have used both of guns...the 22 mag is my fav they are great rifles and very reliable...i sold my 223 and carry a 22 mag almost every day on the ranch............................................. .if you want a long range/small caliber rifle that is very accurate dont mess with a 223 ...go get a 22-250 their far more accurate and are great shooting guns

.22 WMR rounds

My Marlin Model 25 MN, coupled with the Bushnell 4 x 32 scope mounted on it, is a cheap, marvelous rifle. I have put .22 WMR bullets through 3" measured thickness of KD pine boards with it (at a friends sawmill). I would not hesitate to take an eye shot at the deer that use our yard as a rest and browsing station. Only my reasoned fear of protests from neighborhood Bambi lovers, and the 1.75 - 2 mile range warnings on the box, prevent me from having "homegrown" venison for dinner. I shot Expert with the M-1 during my Army stint. This rifle is enough for me at age 70. Fortunately, I belong to a local sportsmen's association where I can keep this rifle sighted in alongside the younger fellows with their AR 15s.

Thumbs up

Knowing NRAJoe, he's likely had three or four .22WMR guns by now and sold them all for something else......

I have four myself, the most venerable and versatile Marlin 25MN, the Mossberg 640KD, the Ithaca 49 singleshot, and the Tanfoglio TA76 western-style revolver. I like them all, but the Marlin is the only one truly accurate.
The Mossberg is disappointing, but an important partof my Mossy collection. The wee Ithaca I originally bought thinking it was .22LR (the tag said that!) but it proved to be .22WMR. Good shooter, but the sights are off and not adjustable.
The Tanfoglio is the grand daddy of today's Heritage Roughrider, and is an okay plinker - really fun with primer-only Colibri loads. I really need a .22LR cylinder for it though! The Heritage cylinder fits in the gun, but the lock holes are off-set. Don't quite work...

At 70, perhaps a good Crossbow would be the answer...

As with any rifle shot placement is most important but--based on my own observations the .22 WMR is a great little cartridge. For years my brothers and I were gypsy loggers. We had many "camp raiders" which we mostly took care of with a .22LR in the ear. However, with the .22WMR we had excellent luck with lung/heart shots on everything from racoon, to timber wolves and black bear. One bear ran 75 yards before he collapsed but that can also happen with an '06. Mostly we have used Marlin bolt action rifles and Ruger revolvers. I am currently using a Taurus 8 shot "kit gun" with 4 inch barrel. Just shot a coyote yesterday with it. Any rifle or revolver that you can hit with ought to do. I think I'm about to buy a Henry lever action carbine in 22Mag-just for a hiking gun and just for fun. I think the Hornet would be a better rifle but reloading is no longer fun for me and the guns themselves are usually more expensive than 22 mags.

FWIW, I've had a Marlin 25M since '87, trouble free, accurate, and my favorite go to gun. Never go to the range without takin it along, regardless of whether I'm bringin handguns, CF's or 22's. Always have to 'check it out with a few clips' just to re-affirm that she's still my favorite. Never disappointed me yet.
