| Moderator ![]() | I have the older Marlin 17V, blued in the wood stock. After a very simple trigger polishing and spring job, and putting in a pressure pad under the barrel at the forend, it will put five shots into a .3 inch group at 100 yards. It cost me just over $200 at Wal-mart a few years back. The new 917V has some improvements - a new trigger (that still needs some work) and is drilled & tapped for weaver mounts (supplied). A nice laminate stock will bump the price up, as will Stainless. Still, good value for the money!

| Member | I've got the same one as Big Dog. Heavy, Blued barrel, walnut stock. He hit the nail on the head, little trigger work and I have no complaints. Gave slightly over $200. Wouldn't hesitate to buy another. The stock on mine started showing a hairline crack after I'd had it about 4 months. I called Marlin and they asked if I had the walnut or laminate stock...I was tempted but I had to be honest and get the walnut. DANG MY GOOD CHRISTIAN RAISING!

| Senior Member | 917 I have a 917V that shoots tiny tiny little groups....bottlecaps at 100 yards. I wrote a review with pics at http://17caliber.com As for the savage, it might be worth it IF it has an "accu-trigger"...(I have one in 30-06)...those triggers on the centerfires are darn sweet! Bob

| Senior Member | I've entertained the idea of getting a .17HMR but after reading this thread I'm not sure if I'd like the bolt action or a semi-auto action. Originally I thought about getting the 10/22 mag and converting it to shoot the .17 HMR since there are so many after-market tweeking accessories out there to add on the 10/22 and to play with. On the other hand I like the idea of a bolt action (such as the Marlin...Ruger LOVES their bolt action to the tune of too high a price for my liking) but don't know enough of the makes available to know if you can buy accurizing and sporterizing accessories like you can with the Ruger auto. Since the gun would basically be a toy that I'd like to see if I could get the 'bottlecap' shots ruger22.com mentions I can't see (yet) putting a LOT of money into the gun on initial purchase. But, then again, I also realize there is some truth to the addage that you get what you pay for. Considering the cost of a 50 round box of rounds it wouldn't be a rifle I'd take out for a 500 round run with. Not yet, anyway, until the ammo comes down some. I see at Midway they have .17 ammo components for sale. I haven't set down and figured if it would be cost effective to buy primed brass and bullets and load for ones self. I've been hanging out on www.Ruger22.com a bit and I'm trying to do some research regarding the .17 HMR as time permits. But, as of yet, as I've said, I haven't gotten the bug badly enough to dedicate some educational time to my searches and readings. I've seen and read only enough to whet my interests at this point. But, I see where Bob likes the Marlin 917V and that must mean something so I imagine I'll give that some more consideration.

| Senior Member | With the research I've done .17HMR is has flattest trajectory. That's exculding .22 Hornet. So, I definitly want .17HMR, and I definitly don't want to mess around with converion kits, or any thing like that, so I definitly want a Bolt Action. |

Also, I have the NEF 17HMR. Ugly gun, but dirt cheap and very accurate.

| Senior Member | 17 What really blew me away was the first day I had my .17hmr and went to the range. I set an aluminum pepsi can down around 100 yards out and started blasting away. I had already gotten my scope set on a paper target and it seemed like I just could not hit/knock that darn pepsi can over for anything.....I finally stomped on out to get the can, and to my surprise..there it sat riddled with little holes. The damm .17 rounds hit it and punched through so clean and quick, it never even knocked the EMPTY can over! It does make golf balls jump pretty good though! Bob

| Senior Member | I bought a 917V new and I have had problems from day one with the magazine dropping down. I have to push up on it before working the bolt action to load the next shell everytime. I suppose I should send it in for repair. Anyone with simular experience? |

| Senior Member | I have posted this before, but it's been a while. I own one of the Savage Stainless Bull Barreled 17HMRs-like the one you pointed to. An excellent firearm to be sure. I had to adjust the trigger down as far as it would go, and it's still not exactly where I would like, but is sufficient enough. Have taken groundhogs at 200yards before with it, that's about as far as I have had a chance to shoot at one when it was in my hands. And if you do plan on shooting that far with one, try to get a good shot placement and use ballistic tip ammo. You can also buy this configuration in a nice gray laminated stock. You might want to think about what practical said about the NEF 17HMR. Bull Barreled and very accurate. Not the prettiest rifle out there, but will do all that the others will, for a lot cheaper. Money you could save and use on a good scope for it. Either way, I believe you will get a shooter, no matter what brand you buy. The 17HMR is a great round, for the application. |
