17 Hmr

Just wondering if any one has any 17 HMR's I have been considering buying one for sqirrell hunting next year. I hear they are very accurate flat shooting little guns. Any input would be appreciated.

Mine is fantastice inside 100yds provided there is NO wind. I still use a 10/22 with a cheap scope on it for squirrels with no problems.

Mine will put every bullet in the X ring at 100 yards no problem.
At 2550 FPS it shoots pretty flat but does lose power quickly at longer ranges.
Its a great little round!

Yeap, it's a good caliber. Just know what it is and what it isn't. For your intended game...it will do fine. Just use some hollow points or the 20gr's. Aim for head shots, and you'll be fine. The V-Max's are messy. If you want messy then there ya go.

My dad reports massive carnage from body shots against crows with the Vmax's. I just can't see the extra expense over 22lr for shooting squirrels. I'm often an early adopter, but I've tried 17HMR and was thoroughly unimpressed.

17hmr

I had a Ruger Single Six SA 17HMR. That firearm had a very flat trajectory
Fun gun. Traded it towards a high end Buckmark 22 target pistol.
Just wanted the Buckmark more than the 17HMR and have nothing bad to report on that firearm.
I enjoyed it when I had it.

I've got the Taurus Tracker M17SS6 - Well made, smooth shooting, fun. But due to the small bore size it's a real bear to clean. Having had carpal tunnel surgery on both wrists a couple years ago made it very difficult to clean until my wrists were fully healed.
