Question Buying a .22 need some advice :)

Hi there all,
I am buying myself (in my fathers name) a .22 that I would like to learn the basics of shooting on. I do already have a .308, but I am not satisfied with how I am learning on it. I would like some suggestions on what kind of .22 I should buy that is left handed. I might as well get one used because I don't want to put up anything over 200 dollars. I am looking for a 22 that I can learn on without the hassle of recoil and anticipation of noise. Thank you very much.

I would also like some suggestions and links on the type of ammo I should buy (that I can get in bulk).
One question - Are all .22's rimfire?
Thanks again.

i think a ruger 10-22 would be a great choice, even though it is not left handed. It is very accurate, quiet, and has very low recoil! hope that helps a little bit

Thank you . I'll look into it.

Should I get another bolt action or a semi-auto?

I know for me a semi would mean that I might not take all my shots carfully because I know I can just pull the trigger again and again.

my own opinion, is that those stocks are junk. the 10/22 is a good little rifle. for bolt actions, you might be able to get a lefty savage MKII in your budget. for a little more you might find a left handed CZ. budget wreckers would be a kimber or a cooper at over a grand each.

Would the Ruger 10-22 fit what I need? I'm just trying to get acquainted with the recoil so I learn not to flinch. I'm also trying to learn iron sights and to save money on the ammo.

Why is the stock junk? Do you know of something that has a pistol grip? I enjoy those a lot.

Thanks for your help all.

Most certainly.

Lefty was simply giving you an option in the event a bolt action interested you.

yes, the 10/22 will work. you mentioned accuracy, so i would not use any of the cheap injection molded junk stocks on the market.

I think I will take what Lefty said into consideration since I do think I want a bolt action because I won't have a tendency of being trigger happy. I also want a left handed gun if possible.

I guess I was just trying to get a .22 really fast and didn't care what I wanted, but if it's in my price range I'll definetally look at it.

I don't think this model is 22. I'm guessing there are others with different calibers.

Edit 2: http://www.thegunsource.com/shopping...dproduct=56967

I think I found one. How's this?

If you want to work on your accuracy, a bolt action will be good for being more accurate iteslf. Semis can be very good, but best accuracy is with a bolt action.

Hey Lefty,

Do you know where to get a pistol grip stock for the Savage MKII?

Pawn shops and yard sales are a great place to pick up a .22. Just takes a bit of searching. I have a 10-22 with a scope, and the J.C.Higgins modle 38 with an M38 matching scope I got for $35.00 is just as accurate.

I have 3 1022's, they are great. There are specialty shops out there that carry lefties, but a little more expensive. The stock you linked to earlier is not the right fit for me, everyone I talked to after handling one of mine with that stock said it didn't fit them either. It sits too low on the shoulder and feels awkward. I have folding stocks with pistol grips on my other two. They are nice and comfy, but it's up to you. Forget what it looks like, go with what feels right.

Thanks for the tip. I like the savage though since I already have one .

I guess I won't try too hard to get a pistol grip stock. I don't think there are any for the type of gun I want.

How sure are you that you need a left-handed gun?

I'm left-handed, but I grew up shooting right-handed anyway. I found out just recently that it makes sense because my right eye is dominant.

Easy test for your dominant eye (I don't remember where I learned this; it may even have been on here): make a circle with your thumb and forefinger like an "OK" signal at arm's length, and look thru it at something far away. Bring your hand in, keeping the object centered in the circle, until it touches your face.

Whichever eye the circle winds up in front of is your dominant eye, and you should be shooting on that side.
