i have a old savage and would like to know a few things about it

Search back a week or so, for the "Savage Model 6" thread - lots of good info there. Same basic gun.

scoutman - I got a very good PDF format parts list / exploded diagram for a SAVAGE Model 6A from Numrich Gunparts [e-mailed to me for a staggering $1.95 total cost!!!] and was able to order parts from them needed to restore it to shooting condition.
