| Member | If you want a bolt action , Look into the old mossbergs, I have a 44US and its a tack driver.Check Gunbroker or Gunsamerica.com. They had some available. Quite a few models made between1935 and 1950something had the heavy barrel and offered outsanding accuracy. Also scope mounts are available that utilize the mounting holes for the rear site(peep). Good luck! shawn |

| Member | For accuracy, you definitely want a bolt action. For squirrel hunting, might I suggest a good semiautomatic. My trusty squirrel gun is a grade I Browning .22 Takedown autoloader. It has brought home much tree bacon in the 20 years I've owned it and sometimes that second quick shot is the difference between a dead squirrel and a wounded squirrel in a knothole. You can get the grade I breakdowns for 300 or so. |

| Senior Member | well there are mant models to choose from my choice would be a marlin model 60 there are many different styles of the 60 that you could choose the gun runs in my area about 150 - 200 and you could pick up a barska 22 plinker scope for 50 dollars on walmart and have a good shooter the remmmington 597 is a good shooter i will soon be gettin one in 22 magnum also there is the ruger 10/22 i do not like it because i think it feel like it has been made really cheep and does not feel like much of a gun to me cause it is smaller best thing to do is go to the gun shop handel the rifles compare to others and make your decison i dont think you will be disappointed with the remington or marlin

| Moderator ![]() | Another very good .22 rifle for plinking and small game is the Henry H001 lever-action. Great little gun - accurate and reliable. It can be topped with a scope, and Henry has the best service of ANY gun company, if a problem should arise.

| Senior Member | Henry or Marlin lever action Either one of these would be good for you. The Henry has better factory workmanship in my opinion while the Marlin has the toughness of an Abrahms battle tank. The Marlin is easy to scope. Note these will have to be bought used for your price considerations but if you can swing it a new one would be a great addition to your arms chest. |

| Senior Member ![]() | I agree with two-70 You can buy a Marlin 981 T in your price range if you shop and I would start with WalMart. If they don't have one in stock ask to see there Special Order Gun catolog and you might just find something else too in it. I came within a heart beat buying this same 22 rifle last week ( I shouldn't of mentioned it to my wife LOL ) It will also match my Marlin 22 mag. Winchester has a new line of boltaction rifles priced a little more than what you want to pay and one has a bull barrell. Check it out too. two-70 I'm fixing to send you a PM about your 981 T...A.H |

| Senior Member ![]() | 22 auto loader All the ones talked about are good ones the marlins are hard to beat for the buck and I always like the Rems. If you want something a little different I might suggest a tauraus I looked at one today that is a copy of a 1903 winchester in 22lr and the price tag was 260. and what a beautiful gun it feeds through the butt stock. An original is big bucks but the copy is affordable. They also make winchester pump copies like the 06 and 61. I plan to save up for the 03 copy after Xmas. |

| Senior Member ![]() | The Savage Mark II's are very accurate for the money. They come with the accra trigger also. I won a Rem 597 at a friends of the NRA banquet, and after shooting it I can't recomend it. Mine would only shoot 1 1/4" at 50yds from a benchrest, and due to the old style mag it would misfeed once or twice every magazine. I only kept it because it is a stainless model with an NRA logo'ed stock. I just stuck it back in a back corner of safe #2. I have to many good .22's to waste my time on that 597.

| Member | I think the Marlin 60 is the most accurate semi-auto for a reasonable price. The Henry lever guns are nice--the Marlin lever gun is nicer, but it's out of your stated price range. In bolt action, Marlin and Savage are nice guns at the lower end of your budget, and at the upper end I'd say to go with the CZ. Whittaker's has the 452 Trainer now for $241.99. I like the older Mossbergs too, but I personally think the 44US is too heavy for a hunting gun. It's really more of a target rifle. Maybe a 340? |

| Member | Here's a decent deal on a reliable semi-auto: Marlin 795 at Gander Mountain It might be time for you to hit the stores and start seeing some of the rifles "up close and personal." See which ones "speak to you." What looks good in a picture doesn't always feel so good in your hand. |
