10/22

Ive decided to purchase a ruger 10/22 and am checking out the models from the cheaper standard carbine to the more expensive target stainless. I'm looking for a decent plinking rifle and am not looking to spend very much money. Would it be worth it to go for the stainless target or would the standard one work just fine for me?

This is my 10/22 and I find it works pretty good. I can shoot drinking straws in half at 50 yards!
I have been thinking about changing out the barrel and stock for a heavy barrel setup. Would cost me under $200 bucks but I don't know if it is worth it?

An option to consider

Given the phenominal amount of aftermarket
parts and gunsmithing services available you might
consider the basic gun as a starting point for
customization as time progresses.

what about the stainless model? would that be worth the extra 50 bucks and is it as customizable as the basic model?

the only thing stainless on the SS model is the barrel. the reciever and triggerguard are silver epoxy. is it worth it, that question you need to answer yourself.

Just go for the standard carbine. Or maybe a Marlin model 60.

Hey Jashoffa, what kind of stainless rings are those on your rifle? They look like weaver quad locks but I can't seem to find those in silver.

.22guy Here is the link at brownells. This is where I got them and they are pretty cheap too. I liked them and they seem to to a good job. They really matched my gun well.

Keep in mind, Stain LESS

If your in a high humidity area, hunt or shoot in the rain frequently, absent minded about wiping your gun down, live by ocean, etc. The $50 adder would be a good option, not a needed option but nice. Or, if you just like the way it looks, like jash's rifle is very nice looking, go for it.

Welcome to the board. The standard is a great starting point. This one started as a pawn shop $100 special, it was pretty beat up. I repainted the receiver with ceramic header paint and changed barrel and stock.

Thanks jashoffa, that's exactly what I've been looking for. I just looked on my normal companies and didn't really see them.

The best bet is to start standard than move up into customizations. Frankly, I just put a Bushnell 3 x 9 on mine and it has served me well for the last 19 years. I like practical over pretty... and the basic, standard Ruger 10/22 is the best start IMHO.

thanks Jerry!

I was going to put a silver scope on it but my wife talked me out of it and I love the way it looks with the silver rings and black scope. If I do add a new barrel and stock on it I am going to stick with a stainless steal barrel and black stock.
