Question .22 magnum guys sound off....

I was at Gander Mountain today and started talking to another gun nut....we were discussing my Colt HBAR then we started talking about .17 HMR vs. .22 magnum.

He said .22 magnum hands down...then proceded to show me a Savage bolt action rifle (forget the mdl number)with 10 round mag in a black synthetic stock for $259 with a bull barrel and already set up for a scope (no iron sights)

It was a pretty cool tight little rifle.

He said he has one and loves it....

How do you guys like .22 Magnum....I never had one or know anyone with one....

More Deer Have been poached with a .22 Mag...
I still have a Winchester Pump .22 mag that is a blast to shoot...I wish I still had my Marlin 57M....it was a tackdriver...Lots of new .22 mag ammo available now too, with different bullets available that we never had in the past.

I have three Maggots.
1) Marlin 25MN - sporter barrel in birch stock, Bushnell 4-12X40-AO scope. Best group shot - 3/8" at 100 yards. Once shot a fly on the target - called and verified by range buddy.
2) Mossberg 640KD - pretty rifle, but not as good a shooter - I haven't yey found the load it really likes.
3) Ithaca M69 single-shot - Martini-style action made to resemble a 'cowboy lever-action'. Good shooter, though has lousy sights.

I like the .22 WMR - I just wish it wasn't so expensive.

I also have a .22 WMR cylinder in my old Tanfoglio TA-76 Il-cheapo eyetalyun revolver. Good little shooter!

So far, I tend to prefer the CCI MaxiMag loads.

I don't currently have one, but I have shot a few. I think you'll like the Savage but I would see if they have one in a wood stock. Savage tupperware is lacking for their rimfires (not sure about centerfire). Anyways, it will be a fun gun and you'll have another caliber to stockpile.

I'd be lost with out owning a 22 magnum rifle. I'm on my 2nd one. You'll enjoy shooting one wether it be at game or targets.
You'll be impressed with how potent they are...A.H

1st is an old marlin bolt, with a tube feed with a 4x40
2nd is a win 94 with my nightscope on for foxes in the henhouse

.22 mag will have more knock down power than a .17 HMR Because of the heavier bullet. That dosen't mean it will always kill better though. I don't own a .22 WMR but shoot one of my buddies .22 mags. Defiently a good choice.

I too was faced with that same choice; and I was also at a G.M. in Grand Raoids, Mi. with my son and I already have a Ruger .22 lr VBZ and absolutely love it. My only thoughts were to get a mag in the same model and have a blast shooting; but my son suggested at least trying the Savage: HOLY COW I was sold and saved $ 300.00 to boot. God, am I glad I listened to my boy. He's now 27 and I'm learning that he has some good advice. I feel as though Father does'nt always know best. 93 in a thumbhole wood, love it!!!

22's don't kill with knock down power. Either way, before you buy a gun from Gander Mtn, do some price shopping. I saved 40 dollars on my .17 HMR by going to a different shop 5 miles away from Gander Mtn.

I have 4 of them, they have been taking alot of bad press with the 17HMR on the scene, but with the 22WMR you have more down range energy. I know the 17 HMR guys are ready to pounce. the 17 is more accuracte over all. BUT Hornady has come out with a new 22Mag rd. a 30gr. V-Max that is to be more accurate and only a little behind the HMR in spd . the new mag is to be 2200 FPS with a 30gr. VS 2500 with the 17 gr on the HMR still double the energy. I have three 17 HM2 they are great flat shooting squirrel/ groundhog guns .but hve not really felt the need for the HMR . My 22WMRs wil cover that need easly. One even shoots under 1/2 MOA on a good day if I don't screw up.GEZZ what more could i ask for.--JMJ-- Still wonder why they didn't push the HM2 like the HMR. it's awesome little rd.

I got a Savage 93G wood stock .22 Magnum with accutrigger a few months ago and it's a blast to shoot. I had some misfires with Winchester Dynapoint 45 gr. ammo but it likes CCI Maxi-Mags and Federal FMJ'S. Still have lots of ammo to try out in it but I like it way better than the .22lr, actually traded my .22lr for the .22 Mag. Never used the .22lr much and grew up as a shotgun hunter and usually prefer shotguns for small game but the Mag looks like it's changing that with it's power and capability to take larger game with real jacketed bullets. It's got plenty of power for hunting, shoots more like a centerfire rifle than a .22 lr. I don't think I'll ever go back to .22lr when I can use my .22 mag...

I currently have 2 - both handguns. Once had an ERMA levergun that I sold, but would like to replace with a 9422M someday.

The handguns are a H&R 676 convertible and an AMT Automag II. Both shoot just fine out to 75'.

This thread just reminded me that I need to shoot my new Marlin 983T 22 magnum.
It's hid about 7 feet from where I'm sitting LOL.

WOW I just drug it out from behind a cabinet and took it out of the case.
It's the BLK. synthectic stock version and the checkering is sharp ! as in like pin point.
All it needs is a scope and I'm good to go...A.H
