There have been some reported problems w/that model. I don't own one, so I haven't paid alot of attention. But I have seen numerous posts on the Rimfirecentral.com Remington forum about them. And some are pretty serious.
Still it seems a popular model. I'd do some research on the possible problems and quiz him as to if he's experienced any on them.

I'd ask him why he wanted to sell it.

Yep, but make sure he's not selling it for a defect.
But if he's a good friend he's probubly not.

I have a friend who got a 597 for Christmas. It had very poor accuracy (3+" groups at 50 yards), and frequent misfires. He tried many things, including different scope, and different ammo, but finally returned it. A decent .22 should shoot under 1" at 50 yards, and a good one with good ammo under 0.5".

Ask to try it at the range for accuracy. Check with different ammo that you plan to use. If it shoots to your expectations for accuracy and misfires, then go for it. Make sure you put 100 rounds or so through it.

i have a 597 and got it from a pawn shop it's very accurate and the mag. feeding problems where fixed with i think it's the 3rd gen. mags. i would say $110 is a good price if nothing is wrong with it and what scope does it have. u can tell if it's the newest mag. if on the side towards the bottom there is a little 10 with a circle around it.

If anything you shouldnt lose any money with it if you dont like it. Reselling it for 110 dollars should be easy.

I agree with the above posters. See if you can try it out and if it works and shoots OK, go for it. You'd be able to sell it and break even if it isn't to your liking.
