What accessories are you talking about? If they are gun specific I don't think you could. I have a 10/22 target (bull barrel) and it is by far the most accurate semi-auto 22lr that I have ever owned, don't know about the Rem. 597 but have heard they are nice also. |

| Rem v. Ruger
I have three 597s: .22LR with stainless heavy barrel and Boyd Evolution thumbhole stock; .22WMR with blued heavy barrel and Boyd Evolution thumbhole stock; .17HMR with synthetic stock and standard barrel. All are scoped. I chose to go the Rem route for several reasons: Over the years I've always had good experiences with the brand and many have posted plenty of expletives about their experiences with 597s so the price tends to be depressed. The 10/22 by far is the best selling .22 semiauto and there are tons of aftermarket accessories for it; consequently an entire "customizing" subculture has developed around it. There are a limited number of aftermarket items available for the 597s. Over the years I have shot a number of stock and customized 10/22s. I regard it as a fine rifle, fun to shoot and highly reliable. When I got back into rimfires, I found the 597 .22WMR used at a gunshop (former owner said he had 'horrible' experiences with it and traded it in) at a good price and a "buyer beware" caution. First thing I did was buy some 3d generation magazines, then took it to the range. Through several thousand rounds, I've had one failure to feed -- and I suspect that was because I ineptly loaded the magazine. In subsequent months, various places had the 597 .22LR and .17HMRs on sale and I bit. Now I have three closely related rimfires with common takedown, cleaning and reassembly procedures. The only issues I've had with the .22LR have to do with crap Rem brand Thunderbolt ammo. All three are scoped and sighted at distances I want to shoot them (.22LR at 50 yds; .22WMR at 75 yds; .17HMR at 100 yds). All three shoot groups in the quarter-sized range and are fully capable of doing that more often than I am. Through several thousand rounds, each has been completely reliable and just flat fun to shoot. I know that others haven't shared my good fortune with 597s but right now I can unqualifiedly say I love mine. |

from my experience the 10/22 is slightly more accurate but jams often with anything but quality ammo so cci whereas the 597 will eat any ammo its fed. gone through about 3000 rounds with the 597 and not a single jam but with the 10/22 about 10-20% of shots jam with the bulk boxes of ammo.

I've heard a lot of bad things about the 597's and especially the .597 in .17HMR. I believe I even read that Remington won't work on the .17's, but they will send you a .22magnum rifle to replace it.

With all due respect, the 597 is a pile of junk, you will spend more time getting them unjammed then shooting. They arent very accurate either. Remington will send you replacement mags for them that are supposed to cure the jamming problem, but dont really do much. Its sad that remington makes such a pile of junk, ive owned one, i know. If u want a good semi auto .22 go with a 10/22, or if u dont want to mod it go with the Marlin model 60, very accurate out of the box with basically NO jamming at all, it is in fact the worlds most popular .22. Both excellent rifles, but steer clear of the 597.

If you are a tinkerer like me, one of the best aspects of the 10/22 is the range of aftermarket parts available to turn it into your Walter Mitty gun. I put a GM fluted SS barrel on mine with a Kidd trigger in a Hogue stock with a Weaver 2x7 rimfire scope. Delightfully accurate and fun to play with.

you will have lots of aftermarket parts for the 10/22,which adds quite a bit of money to the over all price to get good shoot groups. The thompson classic or the r55 will shoot right out of the box as good as a tricked out 10/22.The 597 I hear has alot of problems with the clip and jamming

I would recommend the M597 over the Ruger 10/22 I've owned both, and found the 597 to be more accurate and more reliable. The Ruger has the advantage of having more accessories, but I didn't feel the need to do anything to the M597, except put a target hammer in it and a muzzle break (ok, that counts as accessories, but it's nothing compared to what you can do to the ruger). Those that complain about the M597 not being reliable are using bad magazines and are too lazy to call remington to have them ship new ones over night. If you want to accessorize the heck out of your .22, go for the Ruger 10/22. If you want the gun that shoulders better, feels more balanced, and is more accurate, get the Remington M597. You can't beat a Remington barrel. FYI, if it sounds like I'm biased toward the M597, I am. Out of my 20+ firearms, it may be my favorite. |

I'm going to have to agree with Rimfirespaz on this one.. Unless you are planning to go crazy with mods and loading up on cheap, plastic, hi-cap mags, the marlin Model 60 is gonna be your best bet! And actually you can get aftermarket stocks for that mod 60 these days too. take a look: http://www.gun-parts.com/marlinstocks/P8200012.JPG |

I'm rather biased since my major experience with .22s is from a 10/22, but I love the little rifle. Four of my brothers also have them and love them. Two of my brothers have modded theirs and one got really serious and tweaked his to get 3/4" at 50 yards and 1 1/4" at 100 yards. That's pretty good for a .22 in my book. I recently bought my 2nd 10/22 and I think it's more accurate than my other. The latest one got about 1 1/2" at 50 yards with a cheap 4x scope and me not really doing my best. That's with a stock barrel and no modifications other than a few homemade shims to tighten the hammer and sear up and take the play out of them. That's also with bulk federal ammo. I've never tried any of the higher quality ammo with it, so I'm not sure what it's capable of. However, I do know that I love it and highly recommend it!
