| Which 17 HMR rifle should I buy?
I was wondering if any of you guys/gals could help me decide which of these two rifles I should buy. What I want is a rifle that is more accurate than my 10/22 but that doesnt' require ammo that cost 1 dollar a round, which I can't really afford at the moment. My two choices are the Savage 93 BTVS or the Marlin 917 VST. Both seem to be almost identical rifles. Their both bolt action, chambered in 17 HMR, come with heavy bull barrels, thumb hole stocks, and they both cost about the same amout. Personally I was leaning towards the Savage becuase it comes with the "AccuTrigger." I also noticed that the Marlin comes with the "T-900" trigger. Does anyone know what is special about this trigger? So which rifle would you guys buy and for what reasons? Are there other rifles like these on the market that are better than the Marlin or Savage? My price range is about 450-500 dollars tops, for just the rifle. In advance, thanks a lot for the help! [Edit]: oops almost forgot, here's the links to both. Savage: http://www.savagearms.com/93r17BTVS.htm Marlin: http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firear...num/917vst.asp P.S. Does anyone know what kinds of scope mounts these come with? They both come with mounts but they don't say what kind.. Last edited by Sparrow338; 09-05-2008 at 12:16 PM. |

I'm with Tippmann7 on the Savage 93,I've got one in 22mag and love it. The trigger on the Marlin is a copy of Savage's Accutrigger, the only Marlin's that I have are an old Model 60 that has always been a first rate shooter and an 1897 Annie Oakley that is a safe queen NIB,but Marlin firearms have always been a good gun. On my 93 the receiver is just grooved for scope mounts, but mine has sights and the heavy barrel 93's don't so they might be drilled and tapped receivers on them. Thanks for the feedback. Yea, the accutrigger was the reason that I was leaning towards the savage. For scope mounts I know that the receiver comes drilled and tapped for mounts and that the gun comes with the scope base(s) but I just don't know what type they are. I can always just buy the gun then order the scope rings. Wish I could get my hands on one of these without having to buy it. I didn't realize until yesterday that wally world doesn't have stores that sell guns in CA.. -Sparrow |

Both are good shooters. I think the Marlin might be the better shooter from gun to gun from what I have seen. I can't prove it, but I have reason to believe from a reliable source that Marlin actually uses Green Mountain blanks on all their 17HMR and 17HM2 rifles. I have two Marlins 17HMR's, and both will stack bullets at 50yds. |

I have a 93R17 and I have not been disappointed yet. I can hit chicken eggs at the 200-240yd range and I can put a grouping on paper the size of a dime at 50 yards. I could probably get a better group if my shooting skills are higher because this rifle out shoots my ability. as for the marlin, I have only fired a walmart semi auto marlin .22 and it jammed about every 10 rounds. However, I do believe that marlin makes better guns but I haven't used them. Chris

I HAVE ONE IN 17HMR 93 THE BIG PLUS TO THE SAVAGE IS THE TRIGGER CAN BE SET TO THE PULL YOU WANT. SEEN BOTH AND THE SAVAGE TEIGGER IS THE TING WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT 100 YARDS JUST PULLING A STIFF TRIGGER CAN MAKE YOU PULL OFF TARGET A HARD PULLING TRIGGER CAN BE A PAIN IN THE TALE. AND THE ADDED SAFTY OF THE WAY THE TRIRRER IS MADE IS NICE AND THEN THARE IS THE MICRO GROVE WELL LETS JUST SAY I OWNED A MARLIN AND A SAVAGE 22MAG . SHOT THEM ABOUT THE SAME AMOUNT AND THE MARLIN SHOT OUT THE BARRLE SOME TIME BEFORE SAVAGE STARTED TO SHOW WEAR. HOPES THIS HELPS. LOVE MY 17HMR

Thanks for all the replies! That helped me to choose. So I've decided to go with the Savage due mainly to the fact that it comes with an adjustable trigger from the factory. I've finally worked up enough money to get the rifle and a scope for it. Can't wait to get this thing. Once I get it and get some nice groupings I'll be sure to post some pictures. Thanks again! -Sparrow |
