Sniper SubSonic Ammo

Has anyone tried the Sniper Subsonic ammo made by aguila. I had read somewhere that they are accurate. I found a box at Gander Mountain, and like the idea of a 60 grain bullet in a .22 I tried them yesterday and found them to be accurate and dirty. I shot them through my new 10/22. I just propped on my truck and everytime i shot it was like i had powder come out the action and get on my arm. They were accurate though. Anyone elses experiences are welcome.

The Aguila SSS ammo is a specialty load, good for what it is designed to do, kill small game up close. The heavy bullet does not stabilise in many newer .22 rifles - I find it performs better in older rifles while tending to keyhole in newer rifles. My Romanian M69 trainer likes it - my Ruger 10-22 does not. It will also not cycle in all semiautos.
The heavy bullet has greater drop as range increases too.

My son, with some adjustment was shooting them well at 100 yards.
Maybe some day he’ll teach me.

It's truly best in a Bolt-action or Lever-action.

Not really made for semi-auto...

I carry them in My .22 Pocket pistol. I shot a steel oil drum at 50 ft. and it made a .38 caliber hole in the drum...I like them !

They are simply devastating out of my Marlin bolt gun. And yes, I found them to be very dirty as well !!

That heavy bullet has excellent "Whompability Factor", as a buddy says. It makes a very satisfying smack on the target, and will flat lay out a 'possum.

My old Whitney Wolverine pistol loves the "SSS" round. The Browning Buckmark chokes on them, not liking the short cases.

That ammo was designed just for the purpose in its name. It needs a 1 in 9 twist to stabilize properly. My 10/22 functions but the bullets keyhole. The CZ452 shoots into 1 inch at 50 yards but shows signs of keyholing. The right barrels can be had for the 10/22 from a couple of different makers. The SSS works well from a suppressor. I read an article written by a pro that uses a suppressed 10/22 to cull unwanted deer within city limits. He doesnt use the SSS in populated area as it has too much penetration. It will completely penetrate an adult whitetails skull at 75 yards. Velocity from my 4 inch Ruger 22 auto is 805 fps.

Good to know this. I was all set to try and get some, but almost everything else in standard velocity or match (and some HV hunting rounds) that I put through my CZ does better in terms of groups. Unless the lethality is markedly higher (e.g. for angled shots into quartering-away bunnies to get through the guts and into the chest cavity) I'm giving it a miss.

Though I have considered getting a heavyweight barrel for it...

I have a Rem 597 semi Auto rifle. I want to teach the misses to shot.. Problem is I live in the city. Looking for something quiet I can shoot in my privacy fenced in backyard against the garage .. problem 2 stay bullets. do the CB's , subsonics and others have enough power to break a car window from say 50 or so feet

Absolutely. They have enough power to kill at that range if you hit someone in a soft spot as well. Never shoot a firearm in town. There are way too many people around. Also, I'm sure it's illegal and if you were caught, you'd be in a buttload of trouble.

Unless you are going to build an Underground Shooting Range...like some members have...you really don't want to fire a weapon in the city limits...there are usually laws against it.

I tried the SSS in a 10/22, berretta 22 noes, and Marlin 56. By far the worst ammo for a 22 I have seen. Not accurate, you need a 1-9 twist barrel to stabilize them otherwise you get the keyhole. It did cycle the action on the semi's but otherwise I was let down.

It's meant for 1:9 and even faster out of a bolt action ?? All my old 22's shoot it flawlessly. The new ones can't stand it !!

I've shoot them thru my old Marlin 80 bolt action and they did pretty well.

If you shoot them thru a pistol, like I did thru my Ruger Single Six, they do have sound from them, not quite a .22 short but pretty close. In the rifle they sounded like a high powered pump pellet gun.

As far as killing power, best for small varmints at close range in my experience. I did kill a racoon with them at close range, one shot.

As stated not intended for semi-auto firearms, may or may not cycle action. Overall I think its good ammo, just depends on what your are wanting to do.
